Seems like there's one in every club, we have one who's a bit of a wierd Klingon. :rotfl:

There used to be a huge number of Morris Minors in Zimbabwe when I lived there in the late 80s. That and Datsun 120Ys. If you could get a shipment of either of those out you'd make a packet.

I quite fancy a Datsun 120Y myself (1972-78 model). Preferrably in turquoise.

Pretty rare car in the UK, especially the 2 door coupe. Wouldn't say no to one myself. :D
  • I'd be surprised if there are any left in the UK, didn't they have serious rust issues??

    Nah, that was Alfasuds

I bought a two year old one in the early '80s (newest car I've ever owned) and it failed its first MOT on rust. Delightful handling car, ideal for a youngster "blatting" around London (in the days before speed & RL cameras)

Not many Japanese cars from the 70's or 80's got to the first MOT without welding.

classic cars can look amazing especially some of the sports cars but there are too many issues for me to be anything other than a toy

reliability will be an issue especially compared with modern cars

but my biggest issue is the problem that 5 star euro ncap cars have created, these things are basically battering rams and they destroy anything that's not designed with a safety cell and crumple zones, they will simply go through most classic cars and gawd forbid your in something like a mini which has zero protection

5 star baby car destroying a pre ncap volvo

and again a little yarris destroying the driving compartment of a giant volvo

and gawd help you if you get hit by a 5 star Chelsea tractor like an audi Q6..

I doubt you would be any less safe in a Mini now than you would have been 30 years ago. The crumple zones on modern cars absorb energy and that is a benefit to both parties in a collision. Having said that, your chances of being involved in a accident might be higher due to the greater numbers of cars on the roads and the reduced visibility out of modern cars.

One of the motoring programmes did several side by side tests with a classic Mini against a couple of its modern counterparts. I can't remember all the tests, handling and interior space were two of them, but the old Mini ran rings around the others. Then they decided to do a (rather unscientific) crash test by running the Mini down a steep slope into an obstruction. I think the expectation would be that the Mini would fall to bits. It didn't, there was minimal intrusion into the cabin and they could still open the doors.
