How much for a bag of kindling?

  • Unfortunately mate - doing the "right" thing isn't always the easiest thing!

If you wanted them collecting from your place, you'd probably be looking at hiring a skip. Most half decent waste disposal companies are now sorting their incoming streams, and the majority of it will end up being recycled in some manner. I worked for a subsidiary of a local skip firm a while back, and they had a huge picking line in an old power station. Only about 15% of what came in went to landfill - and as they had to pay commercial rates for tipping like ayone else, they made sure that everything that could be recycled was removed first.

They ended up with various types of plastic, ferrous and non ferrous metal, about three grades of crushed stone/hardcore, clean wood which was shredded to a specific size and went to a power station, contaminated wood (like your doors) which went to be incinerated, paper, cardboard, plastics and so on. They'd send a couple of big bulk tippers to the tip every day, but that was pretty small compared with what was coming in.

Many of the council "household recycling centres", or "the tip" as most of us call them, do pretty much the same - the only difference is that we do the bulk of the sorting first.

    Cheers,

    Andy

I paid £3/bag for kindling. I'm not sure of the bag weight, but 5 bags will last me 100 fires, give or take a bit.
