And yes if you fritter away the money to get it under £6000 they will want to know where it went, and yes you will have to prove it (unless you claim it was spent on drink and drugs then they don't care)
Forum etiquette
Please be nice to all MoneySavers : There's no such thing as a stupid question and, even if you disagree, courtesy helps.
Please be sensitive : This may be a web forum, but you’re still talking to other human beings. Repeatedly or harshly saying someone’s wrong, especially on boards like DebtFreeWannabe, Bankruptcy or Benefits, can lead to upset.
We’re proud that many people whose financial problems exacerbate mental health issues seek help in the forum, but this means you may be berating someone who’s clinically depressed. Please think twice before posting judgmental comments.

You are entitled to claim but spending £6,000 wouldnt really make sense as £14,000 minus £6,000 equals £8,000 so they would still take money off you ... plus if you go from £14,000 and money off your benefit to £6,000 and full benefit they will want to know what the money was spent on and depending on that could make a deprivation of capital decision0

You said the other day that you have been offered work at a school?0 -
Oldernotwiser, Anybody who lives in the UK contributes to the benefit system either through direct or indirect taxaxtion, please don't let me think you are niave enough to think it only comes from national insurance contributions or other isolated forms of tax.
However, that point is to be honest irrelevent. The fact of the matter is is that if somebody is entitled to claim irrespective of what you or others on this forum think then they should be allowed to without harrasment from others. The people who are entitled did not write the rules and as long as they operate within them then it is not for others to criticise or belittle. I would suggest if you feel things are so wrong and the wrong people are entitled to claim that you speak to your MP regarding the legislation.
My suggestion would be that if you don't like the thread go and find one that you do like. The purpose of forums such as this one is for people to come and get information and they should be able to do that with incurring the wrath of a number of very small minded people who to be quite frank have probably no room to criticise.0 -

I haven't been naive about anything, simply asking a straightforward question. You may not be aware that many benefits are contributions based and you can have spent vast sums at Tesco and yet not qualify for them.
As for your so kind suggestion, I don't know what provoked this response but I have only made one post on this thread, everybody has generally been helpful and exceptionally forbearing with the OP, so I suggest that you stop stirring up trouble.:)0 -

A very pointless and childish question is what provoked that response.
Whether benefits are contribution based or not does not determine where the money comes from to fund them. That is just a way in allocating who is eligible or not. Spending vast amounts of money in Tesco does help fund them through the VAT that the purchases attract. The Inland Revenue does not keep money derived from different taxes in different pots for subsequent spending. If the did there would be no potholes and cheaper petrol through collection of road tax, pensions would be a lot higher etc.
Why would I want to be causing trouble, I only gave supportive answers up to the point you posted. I am sitting struggling to see the point in your original question, but there again looking at you subsequent answer I can see that you are naive enough to think that contribution based benefits are only funded from NI payments.0 -
