My renewal, like many others, has increased from £50 to £70 for 3 years. I rang them but they wouldn't budge. Do you think that the 'cancellation teams' mention in this thread would help?

hey, as I said before i work for cpp and i think this is why.
This is because the old tier policies (v1 and v2 classic) are being phased out and replaced with the new tier ones, currently called the v2plus, which are £29 a year or 70 for 3 years. You should get a renewal letter 6 weeks before, and also have 14 days to cancel it, so if you are inside that time you can cancel it no problem (although we do get targetted on how many cancellations we can turn around, much as i hate doing it, so someone may try and talk you out of it first). however, if you're outside that period, and we get hundreds of calls like this everyday, you will have a bit of trouble cancelling it, and will have to write to the refunds appeal department and try with them. hope this helps, and anymore questions i'll try and answer!

    Interesting,
my Sentinel renewal has just come through as £50 for threee years which I thought was steep, now I've seen many are paying £70.

I've been with them for ages (12 years?) and it was originally £30 for 3 years which I thought was fine. It's been automatically debited previously but now since Barclaycard bought up Goldfish and changed my card number they can't use the auto debit and have written asking me to renew.

The thing is in 12 years I have never used them and as mentioned somewhere else I frequently forget to update the card numbers when the banks renew them so it's pretty pointless. I don't travel abroad so won't need their 'getting stranded' package. So I'm seriously considering not renewing.

I actually came on-line to see if there was a similar but cheaper package available. Anybody found one ?

    I won, I won, I won!
The only two I know of are: CCP and Sentinel (most of the Credit Card Companies that offer protection also use one of these two suppliers to manage the scheme for them).

Are there any more companies that offer cover?
  • Glad I decided to check out your website.

I have recently had my Credit Card Sentinel renewal notice - now Sentinel Gold at a greater cost with lots of added facilities that I don't need: locks renewed if house keys lost (covered by household insurance), ditto car keys (covered by car breakdown insurance), replacement of handbag / briefcase / etc (mine aren't expensive, but if they were they would also be covered by household insurance).

I wasn't going to pay the extra and was looking for a cheaper alternative, but there obviously isn't one - all the banks and shops which issue the cards seem to use the same card guard scheme. And they always suggest you use it (of course). As I'm still not sure what I am already protected for from the card issuers I'm not sure what extra protection I may need, if any.
  • Just had renewal with upgrade to Gold at £80
All they offered was reduction to £70 said gold replaced all previous covers
    So cancelled
  • Just got off the phone with CPP (aka CardGuard). They debited my HSBC credit card account for £25 this week for annual card protection insurance, despite the fact I had not renewed my card protection with them. The lady from the call centre was quite helpful but understandably did not want me to cancel as they are clearly not keen on losing business - who is?
My friends who work in finance told me that as long as you call or notify the insurance company (CPP, Sentinel, etc) within 14 days of being debited, they will refund your money in full. After 14 days it gets tricky and they may offer a partial refund.
I think when you call them, you need to be firm and quite clear in your own mind why you are cancelling your card protection. If you are not sure, I can see how it is easy to become irritated and angry at the poor person from the call centre, when all they are doing is their jobs.
I reckon card protection is unnecessary and I do not know many people in my circle of friends who waste their money on it. Same story for PPI...
  • I just discovered Card guard renewed my subscription for 3 years even though I no longer have that card. They renewed using another banks card. They could not provide my current address, card expiry or security number. Capital One still authorised this fraudulent transaction.

Card guard would only refund 1 year as transaction was at Christmas and more than 14 days ago. Furthermore they tell me I will be charged again next year if I do not cancel in writing in ONE YEARS TIME. Appalling.

  • Im not sure if anyone has pointed this out because i didnt read the hole thread. But i have card gaurd with HSBC, this not only covers your bank cards for all the above reason but! It also includes your passport, driving licence, and any other card that you can possibly think of including things like boots & matalan club cards. They will replace for you and get them re-issued if lost or stolen. For me, £20 a year for all this cover is no skin off my nose... The passport & driving licence are biggys, also the protection against fraud.
  • I have been with sentinel gold for many many years and have never had the need to use them until now,we were on holiday at Butlins last week and took a trip out to Skegness. I went to the toilet were you had to pay and put my purse down and I forgot it as soon as I realised I went back it hadnt been handed in to the man in charge, my daughter who was with me got on her iphone to one of my banks I cancelled two of my cards, she also got the location of my other being tsb we went there straight away there was a long queue than a assistant came to the back of the queue so I said I had lost my purse she took me straight away to a room it was being used so was the next she than took me up the stairs to another but the computer would not accept my details. she finally took me back to the main area it was still very busy, and she gave me the phone it took awhile for them to respond I had to give my details to them in this very hard for me to hear for this right near the outside door, but managed to cancel my card. thats when I remembered sentinel, asked my husband for the car keys but being on holiday brought different ones without the tag on.we then found there was a police station to report my loss, which is no fun dragging a 6 year old round with you, the officer took my details and asked if I reported it to the security at the centre which I didnt know about my daughter got the phone number up I rang but they said no purse had been handed in, I thought I had done every thing I could being distressed and in an unfamiliar town my purse also had a good amount of cash in it. We was on holiday so just had to get on with it,(that day was ruined.) When we got home there was a reminder for my renewal so I read it and said to my husband I can claim for my money so got on the phone spoke to the operator only to be told it has to be reported within 24 hours said I was on holiday but it didnt make any difference. Will I be renewing my protection again I most certainly will not.

I've just had my Sentinel 3 year renewal through and it's now £85 plus almost £5 Inurance Premium tax. Sounds like Sentinel is trying to profit from CPP's smacked wrist from the FSA. I'm going to use Martin's cardsgone.com now as that's too much for convenience but I wish he would include passport and driving licence numbers too as it was good to know those were also covered.

Feeling the pinch but trying to bring down that mortgage - thank heavens for MSE.com!
