why'd you sign up to this con in the first place? They rely upon this sort of scenario to make even more profit from you.

When I took it out 6 years ago it was £39 for 3 years and was renewed 3 years ago at the same price. I thought £13 per year was a reasonable cost for card protection. The least they could do was advise me that the amount had increased almost double before debiting my account. It ain't always easy to see a "con" until it happens . . .

£13 per year is still £13 too much IMO
  • I've been renewing my Sentinel policy annually for many years. I had my purse snatched a few years ago, and the response and cover provided was very reassuring and took all the grief out of reporting the missing cards and requesting replacements.

Last year I paid £18 for a year's cover - which I considered fair - but my latest renewal has "upgraded" my cover to Sentinel Gold for £29.

I called on Sunday evening to ask whether they still offer a "standard" level of cover - and was told I'll need to speak to one of the "cancellations team" between 8am - 8pm Monday to Friday.

I'm guessing they're getting a lot of cancellations as they assumed that's what I wanted to do...and they could be right. This high handed treatment of loyal customers is unforgivable. No way will I be paying £29!

If your card is stolen, you are only liable for the first £50

The question is, do you consider piece of mind worth £20 a year?

Add if your card issuer disputes a transaction, i.e. claims you haven't been careful with your PIN, then you still pick up the cost of the fraud.

IMHO, the best way to protect YOUR interests is to change from Chip & PIN to Chip & Signature.

We have just discovered a debit for £70 from Sentinel Gold on our Barclaycard. Although we've been with BCard since 1983 apparently there is nothing they can do about it. They will not dspute the transaction. We have never been written to.

Thanks for the information regarding 14 days - it is presently 10 days since it was taken so fingers crossed we will get this money back.

We've just checked all our cards to ensure nobody has a recurring transaction set up and luckily this is the only one - I suggest you do the same.

Heres one from Nationwide for £12/year or £29/3 years !!

    Click Me for more info

Im not sure wether you need a nationwide card or not but its a good price !!

I dont use CCP but maybe someone could let us know wether its a good policy or not !!

My Sentinel is due for renewal now-ish, May 2008. Guess what - £70 for 3 years! Unfortunately Nationwide AND Alliance & Leicester AND Barclaycard all charge the same as Sentinel: "just £29 per year, or £70 for 3 years" Coincidence, perhaps??
    Isn't that a 240% increase by Nationwide? :(

Sentinal used to be Cardwise - imuch cheaper. In those days you could get security stickers, luggage labels, suitcase straps, etc, etc; none of these is available nowadays.

Anybody know of the best deal around now for Card Protection? Please??

Just called them today. Same issue as everybody else. Was put through to cancellation dept who after trying to convince me of the value for money of their new policy at £70/3 yrs, suddenly gave in and said they could discount the policy to £20/1 year or £50/ 3yrs as I was a "loyal" customer (LOL). So they are still offering this if you push them!

Not sure if I get the new policy cover for that price though - it wasn't clear but calling it a "discount" implies that I would. I have a lot of cards (most I don't use except for discount days etc) and I am still trying to make up my mind whether I dare to go without a policy at all. I'm sure that I probably don't need it, just need a record of all my cards at home instead.

Update on the nationwide policy that someone posted on this thread, It isthe same price as Sentinel now, (not £29/ 3 yrs £12 a year as stated in the post) so possibly now they offer the same policy as Sentinel?
  • Be of good cheer, Squibbler!
As everwhere seems now to charge £29 or £70 for 3 years, I have renewed with Sentinel - but after the usual sparring "as I have been a customer for a long time" it's £50 for 3 years  !!
After your post I confirmed that it is definitely the £70 deal with £20 off - not a different scheme.
  • Check your contract with your bank or CC issuer. In most cases if you look you will be liable for £0 of the amount taken. ONLY if you alert them as soon as you see the fraud, or contact them within 24 hours of the card being stolen. In most cases the bank will see it before you and contact you stright away, and refund you. Anti-fraud companies and the media inflame the rate of fraud to scare you into buying their product. All the bank asks you do is protect your pin, as much as you can. e.g they will understand if you gave it over at knife point. Aslong as you do this you have nothing to worry about.
