I'm thinking about maybe buying in hull as prices are extraordinarily cheap there and it seems to meet many of the requirements specified in a book I am reading: regeneration, industrial, good transport links...

Hmmm, not sure about the good transport links. For a city, the transport links and public transport system in Hull are appalling.
There is, however, a lot of regeneration work going on in the area. Like most cities, Hull has some truly awful areas and some nice areas. There are some very nice villages just outside of Hull but the prices are higher so you might not get the bargain you're looking for.

Does your 'North' extend to Scotland? There are some inexpensive properties up here too

I am no expert in property but have lived in many types of homes, in many locations and can only talk from experience.

From where I'm sitting, Luton is North:wink:

All my family originate from Lancashire, on the odd occasion I'm required to visit (weddings, funerals etc). It really does look like Coronation Street.

I did have a good chuckle at all the Hull posts, particularly the Chav central site. Don't think it's only the North that it's prevalent, it's spread all over the country like an illiterate hoody virus...

I would say that you would have stiff competition to get any buy to let property in Hull, especially for a 'bargain' price.

A couple on location, location, location wanted to buy to let in Hull ages ago and found that they were priced out of the market then. I think the programme aired last year or the one before.

Prices are significantly up and continue to rise steadily.

For all of you who have taken a pot shot at Hull, carry on, stay where you are, please do not come to live/buy here, it truly is a terrible place to live, so please never ever venture up the A63, it's really too dangerous. ;)

Just leave this gem of a city with its cafe culture, great shopping, fantastic parks, excellent people, and great, green, open spaces, university, theatres, rugby (mighty black and whites:T ) and honest too goodness northern hospitality alone.

I love it here and I'm from Lancashire and thats really saying something.:rotfl:

Possibly true, although prices in Hull are still probably cheaper than most places. There are still some very cheap properties, but probably in areas you wouldn't want to buy. That's not to put Hull down, most cities have areas in which most people wouldn't want to live.

I think I recall reading a few years ago that student rents were so cheap in Hull because there were so many student properties available. Not sure about the situation in the more up-market areas or the areas surrounding Hull (like Hessle, Willerby, Beverley). May be still a good investment.

I certainly agree with you that Hull is nowhere near as bad as it is often portrayed in the media. There are much worse places to live, many of them in the south of England;)
But 'cafe culture'? I've yet to spot that. And 'great shopping'? I'm not a big fan of shopping, but Hull city centre seems pretty naff for shopping compared to other cities. Although, that is in the process of improving with the regeneration work in the city centre

It's not all terraced houses in Lancashire, we even have loft apartments in converted mills where we are;).

Property prices here are similar to the prices in Basingstoke and FTB can't afford to buy (or rent) because wages are low and all the skilled manufacturing jobs have gone to China or India.
