I use electric radiators during winter, and lights, but everything else we share 50 50... fridge, oven, dish washer, immersion heater, washing machine.. can't see how £50 of a £66 bill is fair.
Nor I. You both heat the house in the morning before you get up - 50/50. You both heat the house in the evening when he's home - 50/50. All you are doing is topping up the heating during the day to prevent the temperature dropping once it's already warmed up; OK, some lights, PC use etc, but most of the rest of the use is 50/50.

I no longer seem to have my spreadsheet showing how much my heating increased when I started working from home, but it was something like 20% or so. It certainly didn't treble, which is why paying three times as much as him can't be right. I still think 60/40 overall is about right.

Why not take a meter reading as your housemate leaves for work and another as he arrives home, then repeat at the same time the next morning? That would give you a guide to what proportion of the units you solely use on a weekday. Monitor it over a few days, find out how much is being used at the weekend and arrive at a fair split from there. You might suggest, since you would be taking responsibility for all of the electricity in the house while you were there alone during the winter, that your housemate contributed 50% towards the bill in the summer, when you are not using the heating.
  • Hi everyone, sorry i have posted this in another thread too by mistake.

Some advise would be really appreciated.

I moved into my terraced house on 27th june 2006 and i have just received a bill for £548.51 from powergen. Am I naive in thinking that is is very high considering how mild the weather has been ( I did not even have the heating on). I have storage heaters but i only ever use the one in my bathroom and the one in my hall and it's only just got cold enough to keep those on all the time, I've never used the "boost" either. When i moved into my property my cooker and fridge freezer broke down so they were not using any electricty for the first month. I have rang powergen and they said the bill is right
