Is this an insane bill?

Hi there

Following from my other post regarding a large bill I have worked out that my average bill for a two-bed newbuild flat with electric only (no gas) is £66 a month for the last 5 months?

Would people say that is a lot.

Bearing in mind one of us works from home, how would you split the bills. I have suggested 60%, 40%, based on the fact things like washing machine, fridge, dishwasher, immersion heater, microwave are all equally shared still...

My housemate claims that in his last house he paid only £10 a month for electric... but that was gas, and had six people living in it!

£66.00 per month!!!!!!!!!!! That's ridiculous. I would get onto your supplier and explain you are staying in a two bedroom flat and not a HOTEL. I had this problem before but on a higher scale. A certain 'company' tried to charge me £500 for 3 months in a one bedroom flat. It later turned out that whoever took the reading added on a few thousand units!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck, but I would definitely contest that.

My mate lives in a one bed flat, elec only. He doesn't use the bedroom, he has a sofa bed in the lounge, so only has one storage heater on. If it's really cold he may put the hallway heater on as well. He goes through around £10 a week electricity in the winter (40 per month) and about a fiver a week in the summer (£20 a month).
  • I'm sure the OP could estimate their electricity usage better than any of us. Usual culprits are tumble driers, freezers. Are lights left on? Does the home worker use a PC and have tV on as wll.

£66 per month doesn't seem too ridiculous to me but that's not to say you couldn't be more conservative.

  • You must be with Powergen. That is how much they charged me when I was on matenity leave in my 2 bed flat two years ago.

Forget the actual amount that you are paying. What is the actual usage in kWh? You could be paying a much higher rate for each unit, depending on your supplier and location. Put this actual usage information into a reputable comparison site like ukpower to find a cheaper supplier.

We're with Scottish Power. I am trying to work out how much must be from me working from home. The last 5 months that I based the average on aren't exactly the cheapest ones - we missed the cheaper summer months. Would a 60, 40% splt be fair. He is asking for 75% which means I would pay £50 and him £16 eachi month.. which I don't think is fair as I only use the computer and heat (winter months) during the day, nothing else really...

Hmm sounds about right for what I'm using then, as I'm not tight with electricty and I like the house to be cosy. I work next to a window and a lot of cold leaks in through the cracks.

Has everyone who replied seen that I am electric only not gas.

Sounds about right, esp bearing in mind it's winter and you're heating with electricity.

60/40 sounds about right to me; my heating bill went up a bit when I started working from home. It was noticeable, but it wasn't dramatic. Go to 65/35 if pressed, but 70/30 would be way too much.
