Roast potatoes in yogurt

Options
Sorry if this is up somewhere else, I couldn't find it.

We make our roast potatoes and parsnips in natural yogurt instead of oil.
Just paint them with yogurt before you stick them in the oven, but do it after you pre boil them :D

They come out lovely and once you get used to them, you will notice how oily they were before.

do they come out crunchy? i cant help but think of yoghurt coated raisins but i know thats not the same lol

i got natural yoghurt in the fridge too!
It only seems kinky the first time.. :A
  • The thread title was so bizarre, I had to have a look... can you describe how the potatoes actually come out, and whether you use full/low fat or fat-free? I've got some fat free natural in the fridge! Would it work on sweet potatoes & other veg?

Well they come out sort of hard, not with a thick crunchy crust.
With gravy I don't notice any difference at all.
Try a couple in a seperate pan, they seriously don't come out with anything like yogurt on them :)

I take a lot of effort to try to stop my roasties from being to oily so this might suit me.

I don't suppose it matters if it is live yougurt or not?

Beer, have you tried freezing and re-heating them later? I'm thinking HM frozen ready meals here, they are an essential for me.

I think we've used both without noticing any difference. We normally have cheapy, 1% fat natural yogurt.
We used it on parsnips, but nothing else. I presume it would work. Don't put it on too thickly.

Don't know about the live yogurt, but it will probably kill it in the oven anyway :)

We always make bubble and squeak next day, so have never frozen them, I can't see any problems, in fact they would be less damp than oiled potatoes I should think when frozen.

  • Thanks - I might give it a whirl today...

How did you get the idea btw?
