Have you removed the battery and pressed the off button for a while?0

Get on with it.

There are varied offered solutions, including changing the CMOS battery.
You can also test the hardware using Ubuntu. Create a Bootable USB drive in the manner shown(no technical expertise necessary).
Once created, plug it into the Netbook, switch on and hope it boot from USB. If not, reboot, select F9(I think) and choose 'Boot From USB' or similar. Select the option 'Try Ubuntu'. It will open only in RAM. If it works you can actually navigate to your HDD in order to retrieve your data without the need for the USB caddy. If you get to that point, we'll look for instruction for that version of Ubuntu.0 -
Ok, operation battery out and switch back on was a fail although there is now an interesting 'blue flash screen' added into the sequence. There's some text involved but it's a quick blue flash and I can't read that quickly.
I will do the Ubuntu thingy once I have found a USB stick. I know there is one around here somewhere.
Thank you for your help, I hope I can sort it from here but I can't say I've overly confident...

Let's see how 'Try Ubuntu' fares. Too many variables to pinpoint the exact problem from here.0

Hold on. These little things are great, with the problem being the processor, a VIA one instead of AMD or Intel, so it was a bit fast and a bit hot. There was a 1.2 and 1.6GHz (and another slower one I think) version and the 1.6 was especially prone to overheating, which meant a new motherboard as the chip is soldered on.
BUT if OP is getting a screen up then it IS NOT this problem - his HDD is gone/going (there was an option of a SSD though). If it's a failing HDD, the next time it works could be the last. Get it into a SATA enclosure or the suggestion above, plug into another computer, and BACK UP anything precious, if still possible. Then buy a new HDD, and install Windows 7 instead which runs a lot better than XP!0 -

We'll know more when they boot up with Ubuntu.0
