So worry about that after you have retrieved your data.

It is a version with an HDD isn't it? What capacity of HDD?

How do I find that out? I can't see it anywhere on the bottom (but that doesn't mean it isn't there)

    Solutions include look here
Don't do it(mess around with the Motherboard) until you have tried the other options. Unless you don't care about the netbook. Have a look at some of the options in the link provided here.

If it had Windows installed, then it is likely the version with an HDD. The Flash version only had a 4GB drive.

    I won't, I care.

The thing is, all the ones I read say black screen. This one seems to have a bit more than that. It wants to boot up but it just seems beyond it at present...

thank you, could I find out for sure by pressing an F something key and having a mooch around (without changing/saving anything)?

ETA - it had been getting hot lately

    ETA? :)

I think someone suggested removing an internal grille that would allow the air to flow more freely and thus prevent it from getting too hot.

"It wants to boot up.." Perhaps a more accurate and technical description might help. :)

    ETA = edited to add

    I'm trying! :D

It isn't just a black screen. If I leave it on, it gives me the 3 safe mode options to boot up, along with last known good configuration and start windows normally (which is highlighted by default). If I don't choose one of the options, it goes ahead and tries to start up normally but then comes back to this screen. It goes onto the windows xp starting up screen, then hp invent screen with F9, F10 and F12 options, then back to the safe mode etc options. And repeat...

Do you have an external optical disc drive?

    You are not alone
Perhaps there is a BIOS update.

Is there anything plugged into the Netbook? SD Card or adaptor? If so,remove it, then reboot.

No I don't have one but I maybe could borrow one from somewhere.

    There isn't anything plugged in.

BIOS update? Is that what i need the disk drive for?

No, that would be to enter the XP Recovery Console or simply to run a Clean Install after retrieving your data.

But it might not to be a problem related to Windows...

Ah, okay. I unplugged it a while ago and it's finally shut up and switched itself off properly.

Shall I switch it on again and see what it does or chuck it in the fridge or oven or something first? :rotfl:
