  • Pigs Trotters

Make a pot of ham and pea soup, or veg and lentil; you can add as much or as little pulses as you like, then take the trotter out when it is cooked and strip the meat off of it. I am veggie but this was the base for soup when I was growing up. You could also slng broth mix in it. Just use on trotter at a time though, and quite a bit of pulses for a nutritious, stretchy soup.

hi rising from the ashes (writing this for the second time as first attempt has gone, well, i don't know where!).

thanks, that makes total sense! i sometimes get disappointed with veg in soup going a bit 'school dinners' so sounds like this is for me.

has anyone tried using soya/quorn/similar mince or pieces in a SC? suspect it might disintegrate rather...

    thanks

  • :hello:

SC works really well for veggie dishes as well as meat ones...main thing is to remembember to leave things quite chunky & not to put in quite as much liquid as you would for conventional cooking as the moisture is sealed in the crock pot rather than cooking away & the natural juices from the veg also add to the moisure content.

My SC is on for the second day on the trot...braised puy lentils yesterday...they were .

Today I have a made-up, chuck it together, fingers crossed dish in there (I'm always doing this type of thing & mostly they turn out well :rotfl:), grated potatoes, bacon bits, celery, leeks, peppers & peas (all from the freezer) all sauted together prior to chucking in the crock, then bunged in some black pepper & some chicken stock. Well lets see what comes out at the end :p I did a similar dish in the oven a few weeks ago & it was scrummy but I felt it took too long to cook in the oven so was wasteful on the leccy hence trialling it in the SC.

thanks Draagonfly - and i found my original post, didn't think to look if it had gone onto a new page, oops!

right, think i might head to the asda website for a look at their smartprice cookers... :)
  • D&DD - what number did you call sky on? I've paid full price for the big package for almost 20 years now and anytime I've phones to cancel/renegotiate they've been more than happy to do so. I've then had an irate husband!

I'd like to give it another go so would appreciate the number so I can be sure to get through to the same area

    Thanks

lol I thought my ears were burning sorry had to pop out YES the apple braid is lovely with pears and I usually add a bit of ground ginger on top the mixed spice with them :D I'm gonna have to make one now you know!
We love it with a splodge of custard here.
I'm going to try it with some of the pam corbin plum mincemeat I made too.

Re bendy peeps *wow isn't there a lot on here* DS2 has overcrowded teeth, high palette, astigmatism, scoli and other twisted limbs, hypermobility,a hole in the heart, heart murmur and has a dilated aorta :( hence the genetic testing..as we know its some form of collagen disorder but noone knows what!

We knew about the scoliosis and hypermobility but didn't know about any of the rest until we met another parent in hospital and she enquired if he had marfans as her daughter and my son looked so alike.Duly took him to the docs who asked me how long he'd had a heart murmur for!!(This was after his 5th operation)
It sort of snowballed from there but the genetics team reckon we (me and OH) could have just been a 'dodgy combination of genes' :rotfl:they really don't know..

Slow cookers..I didn't get on with mine when I used OXO's as stock, left a funny taste in my mouth but since using the Knorr stockpot things we're using it more and more.

Jo hope all is going well with your move :D

and will someone post a screen warning when talking about knickers dangling as I need to clean my screen..again! :rotfl:

Just incase anyone hasn't seen it the British Larder blog/website whatever thingy is a good resource for using up seasonal stuff. Got an update from them this morning and there is a recipe for pumpkin chutney that looks tasty. I only discovered it a little while back (may have even been somewhere else on MSE) they have great recipes for the C word pressies.

Did a run to Mr T to get the stuff in for this weekends B&B guests, had to stick the heating on for them too...otherwise they will be saying 'Remember that weekend we spent in Wales when we thought we were going to freeze to death....' LOL. Was very frugal with other stuff required though, stuck to my list of four items, one of which was a new tin opener! Ours broke last night, but OH managed to get into the tin I was opening with a heavy duty knife.

On the way home in the car I was listening to a CD I treated myself to S/h on Amazon a couple of months ago, and I really wanted to remind you guys HOW much a bit of music that makes you feel good REALLY improves your mood and how happy you feel. Pump up the volume, sing along!!! Cost me about £2 to 'regain' this album as a CD, I had it on tape some years ago...and was talking about the artist with one of DD's friends who visited in the summer, as he was going to see him in concert. I really had forgotten how much I loved it. We all have very different taste in music in this house, so it's only really when I am in the car I indulge :D

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker I've been Money Tipped!
draagonfly - can I ask for your recipe for braised puy lentils, please? I got six big bags of the things from Approved Food last autumn and am still slowly working my way through them all - I usually do them as part of a sausage casserole but something different would be nice. :)

katieowl - thanks for the link to that blog - that looks well worth having a read through (although perhaps not right now as I really should be getting on with some work :o)
Back after a very long break!
  • DD&D - you are a star:T:T:T:T

Just called Sky and a lovely lady gave me 25% off for 6 months, half price HD for a year and a brand new shiny sky+box which is coming next Friday.

She couldn't believe I still had an old box. Said it was probably antique:rotfl:

I was frightenened to say I wanted to cancel so I said I needed to reduce my outgings a bit and was wondering what I could remove from the package.

So the 25% off will save £78, the new HD will cost £60 for a year (then I can cancel the HD) so overall I'm up £18 and a new box. To be honest the box was my motivation - it's so old and it plays up a lot so hopefully we will get better reception now.

It was well worth the 43 minutes on the phone (she had some technical issues!!).:)
