In (sort of) the words of Gloria Gaynor
"I have survived":T
DS now possesses jeans, shirts, socks, coat, hoodie, football boots and tennis raquet and pyjamas. You would have thought i was torturing him at times. Shopping with DD is totally different - conversations with DD (15) go thus
DD "Can i have this?"
Me "no"
a while later
DD Can i have this?"
Me "no" etc
with DS (12)
Me "Do you want this?"
DS "No"
:rotfl:
Anyways he's togged up for a while, i am a little poorer - but in all honesty he doesn't cost us a lot, even the coat was only £25 as BHS had 20% off today. Last year's coat was £8
I have Christmas cake 1 in oven and am about to tackle the tip that is currently my kitchen. I am guessing the fairies will not be in to do it. Feeling a bit achey and headachey - hope i'm not about to come down with something. I need GQ's nurse to bring me tea.
hope you dont mind me saying, I quite enjoyed reading your story about shopping with DS and DD. Glad it all went well.... until the next time!SPC Nbr.... 1484....£800 Saved £946 in 2013)

I've just watched the special Antiques Roadshow from the National Memorial Aboretum and am fighting back tears. People who object to the wearing of poppies should be made to watch that and realise that the poppies aren't political or religious. They are physical reminders of those who have fought, died, suffered and given their all for us. It doesn't matter what colour their skin was or what country they came from. The man that was an amubulance driver at Dunkirk and the lady that survived 7 concentration camps are equal in that they gave years of their lives. The poppies are a way of remembering and hopefully never repeating the horrors that so many have suffered.
That's my two pennies worth on the subject for what it's worth.0 -

Sorry you aren't enjoying the thread Mardatha - this was never intended to replace the Tough threads - in fact almost the opposite of starting something new without all the baggage of Tough threads. There is a 'Hard Times' thread started by a 'new' member who has since disappeared again that might be more what you are looking for or someone could start another 'Proper Tough' thread....there's room for everyone on the board I'm certain.
No thread can be all things to everyone I realise but I'm not entirely sure what purpose coming on a thread just to complain about it serves tbh...People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

SDG I totally agree - in my naive teenage youth I wore a white poppy, I am still at heart a pacifist but I wear a British Legion poppy - I wear mine to remember - because if we forget the greater the chance of it happening again. Whether you choose to acknowledge it or not we all owe so many of the freedoms we take for granted to the people who gave their lives or were injured.People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

SDG - totally with you there, it was the letter read out almost at the end that had me in tears.
i wear a poppy to remember those who died and honour those who survived.

You'll be proud I was VERY sorely tempted to spend £5 on a book all about Christmas, from recipes to crafts etc. Even picked it up and walked round with it a bit while I started to think maybe just maybe I dont need this, that the Internet is chock full of free ideas etc. So I put it back
just one small triumph for me today

I've been cupboard surfing and found 3 packs of ready mix parsley sauce which is now past the BB date (Just past). I suspect I bought it out of sheer laziness for a fishy dishy but have no desire to make it. Does anyone have any other suggestions for it? - I'm loath to throw them out.
RANT ALERT
I've been stewing away in a foul mood for days now and it's not showing any signs of improving. It started last week when some jumped up old so and so on the train started very loudly making remarks about low lives who thought they were too good to pay their respects and wear a poppy. I was absolutely seething, having lost mine on the way to the train that morning. I swear I will never come closer to slapping someone in public.:mad:
One the way home that night I was reading the paper which carried the shocking story about the couple who committed suicide. The authorities clearly didn't care and I really was wondering where all the "caring" charities were when someone needed them. Well the answer came when I got home, in the post was a letter from a major charity enclosing a sheet of labels with my name and address asking for a donation. As far as I can see they are using donations to pay marketing firms to put together mailshots designed to make people feel obliged to donate when they have been sent something personalised. Seems there is no such thing as "charity" in this country anymore, they are just Corporate companies trying to look socially responsible.
Rant over - I would have posted on the "Praise, Vent and Warnings" Board but I've had my knuckles rapped there before by the regulars who think they own the place - heaven forbid anyone should make an opinionated statement.
I had a mild panic earlier when I couldn't find Twinks hobnobs recipe so I've now located it again and saved it on my laptop. What a disaster that would have been - I've lost count of the number of those hobnobs I've made!
Nipped into Mr T yesterday for some soured cream and noticed when passing thro the baking aisle that ready roll icing was £3.99:eek::eek: - when did it go up??? I buy it for the Christmas cake because hubby likes to help out and he can just about cope with the pre rolled stuff - well actually what I mean is I can cope as there is less mess than when I let him loose with the blocks of fondant icing, some confectioner's sugar and a rolling pin. I was clearing up for ever more:D
GreyQueen - Interested in the mincemeat you mentioned. Last few years I've bought the cheap stuff and customised it with some alcohol before using - has worked out well. Maybe I should customise it with my "prize" from an office raffle a few weeks back - rhubarb licqueur - I've no idea what else to do with it - apart from donate it to the next raffle:)
Off to bed now, think I'll try getting out the other side tomorrow morning:o0 -

scottishminnie, I'm with you on the charity thing. I have several friends who do all the walks, bake sales, sponsored this, sponsored that and I told them years ago that I won't give them money. I don't want to subsidise someone who wants to go to China and walk the Great Wall for some charity or other when I can donate straight to said charity! It's all about being seen as a good person and having a wonderful life experience rather than raising money. Also, awareness? That REALLY annoys me. You don't need to raise awareness of diseases like cancer!
I live in the city centre and one night a few weeks ago, a breast cancer charity closed off all the roads around my flat WITHOUT telling anyone who lives here! We usually get a letter in the post regarding road closures so you can imagine my surprise when, after nipping out to the supermarket, I couldn't get home. The stewards couldn't direct me or tell me which roads were open so I ended up looping round for half and hour until I finally discovered which road was still open. We also have shouting and screaming hoards walk past our flat at 12am, 1am, 2am once a year to raise money for charity, encouraging idiot motorists to beep their horns.
If you want to give money to charity then please do but don't ram it down other people's throats.MFW 2019 #61: £13,936.60/£20,0000
