Co-op asking for ID

    Hi

I'm not going to have a massive rant, but just vent my slight annoyance with the CO-OP.

Today I popped in for a few groceries and two lucky dips for tonight's lottery. The very polite woman behind the counter asked me for ID. Being 23, I was shocked that she thought I was under 16 or even anywhere near that age.

I'm in favour of this challenge 21 policy that most retailers are taking part in (mainly for the purpose of underage drinking), but asking for asking sake is such a waste of time. I quite clearly look over 16 years of age....just for the record, I never get asked for ID for anything, including buying alcohol.

    Rant over.

Morrisons recently refused to serve me a bottle of vodka, and im 26! I had my 6 and 4 year olds with me, and was paying by credit card, but apparently none of that was good enough! I was very embarrassed, and the little old lady behind me offered to buy it for me lol But she got a telling off for ofering :rotfl:

Until about two years ago if a checkout operator sold an age limited item to an under aged, the supermarket was fined. If this happens today, the supermarket is not only fined, but the cashier is also prosecuted and could indeed end up imprisoned. I remember when we watched the training video at the supermarket where I work, I was shocked and now I am over vigilant when selling such items.

I think over regulation can have a detrimental effect on common sense, another good example is all these over complicated Health&Safety laws..

Well, I'm 30 and in the last year I've been asked for ID when buying cigarettes in the local Co-op, going into a 25+ bar (which is fair enough), refused entry into Wetherspoons cos I didn't have ID, and had a bus driver ask me if I wanted a half fare!

The weirdest thing is that I never got asked for ID when I was actually underage - have people got tougher or am I just getting younger-looking the older I get?

I hope he didn't charge you for the bottle? let's face it, it was his fault for not asking for the ID first.

Thinking back, the woman who asked me for ID when buying lottery printed the tickets before asking. I could have just said I didn't have any to cause bother for her.....but i'm not that sort of person!

Lottery tickets can be voided quite easily (manager taught me how to do it to stop me calling for her every time someone didn't ask for the stupid Dream Number and wanted it).
Though the other week I ordered a drink in Wetherspoons, she poured it, then asked for ID. And my mate ordered a cocktail for three of us, I went down to help him with the glasses and I got ID'd (this was AFTER the bouncers ID'd me at the door).

I alwaye joke when i buy age-restricted goods-"its ok i am over 18"-sometimes they laugh nervously thinking i am some kind of nutter,as I am 40 something.Just be happy you look youthful.

Lol...I do that too (much to the disgust of my son).

I usually say....'go on..ask me' and when the poor checkout peeps look completely confused, I tell them I'm offended that they didn't ask if I was over 18. They then look even more confused (as it's well obvious I'm over 18) and they smile at me nervously. By this time my son has marched off with a red face over to his mum (who is quietly 'dancing' to the store music and huming along while she does it........cue son stomping outside cos both his 'olds' have embarassed him). :rotfl:

So, to all those who are of legal age but get asked anyway, revel in it! Age brings it's own rewards, not least the ability to see humour in a situation where maybe those of a more tender age cannot. :D

I popped in to a corner shop in a part of town I don't normally go in, and picked up a few tinnies.

Made some small chat with the chap behind the counter... apparently the place looked empty because they were shutting the shop down.

Chappie mumbled something incoherent (or possibly I didn't catch it because it was the last thing I was expecting to hear... 'You 18?')

I think I gasped, and told him I was 29 :rotfl:

We went out for a meal on sunday, ordered a pint for my self and a bottle for the lady.

put them on the counter (opened bottle) and said i need ID for the lady. As we were only out to lunch, she didnt bring her bag. So didnt have any. So he had to take the opened bottle back and throw it out.

    What a waste!

In instances like that, its very hard to get around. She is 21 so more than legally allowed alcohol. I cant have her drivers licence in my wallet all the time, as she goes out without me. And in defiantly not carrying around a passport for her!

Most places only accept those 2 forms of ID, so were !!!!!!ed!

wow she must have looked really young....you can drink wine with a meal at 16
Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!
