Blackberry BBM

Hi Folks

My daughter needs! (wants) a Blackberry, if not she will be the school outcast destined to see out her days in shame ;)

Anyway I had planned to get her one for Xmas, but as a total mobile phone novice I need to know about this BBM thing.

My main question is do you have to pay an additional cost on top of normal pay monthly tariff to be able to use it?

Apparently BBM is were it's at and texts are soooooo 2010.

Anyone care to enlighten me?

  • £5 a month bolt on for the BB services generally. My daughter has one and we added the bolt on to her o2 Simplicity Sim after buying an unlocked blackberry from Phones4u.

ps, definitely a must for the kids, she was distraught when the service was down for 3 days :) Mind you so was Sir Alan Sugar by all accounts on Twitter!

BBM basically is a messaging service which lets Blackberry users
    message each other for free

Whatsapp is a similar program but key difference is that you can
message Android, Iphone & Blackberrys and maybe symbian

These kids are so last year!!! :p

    Also there this

So if you got an android/iphone she could ring you and her friends for free
Blackberry will be getting it soon to

    Indeed :p

Samsung have also launched a free (well it uses data, so depends on your allowances really) messaging service called ChatOn - it's for now only available to Android phones (not just Samsung ones) but will be rolled out to other platforms soon including iPhone and BB, and will also include a web version accessible from a browser.

A unlocked/SIM Free BlackBerry is a good idea, as it allows her to change networks if she wishes.

Don't commit to a long term contract if you can help it.

Alas i have succumbed to this thread. My DD has a £5 per month bolt on for free messages (this now costs £7.50 - but she still has £5 tarriff :) so £10 usually lasts 2 months.
Am i right then in saying she can put this sim into a payg blackberry and add another £5 bolt on for internet and be able to use full range of blackberry / bbm / facebook etc ?
Therefore costing £10 top up per month ?
    Thank you

  • She needs the Blackberry Internet add on (BiS). Which is specific to Blackberry's, but yeah you have the right idea :)

I've been using BBM for years and swear by it, cut my texts down from about 900 a month to 200! Also to reiterate the above, Whats App is good if she has any friends with iPhones etc.
This thread has me so pumped, I headbutted my dog and we both screamed.

My daughter wants a Blackberry mobile phone for Xmas thinking of getting a payg one from Tesco using double up vouchers and combining this with a current sim only contract from T mobile £7.50 a month 600mins 500 texts 1gb of data.

My daughter says does this cover Blackberry messaging?,I dont have a clue what she is talking about.

Do you have to have a Blackberry special tariff to get BBM or can she use her current T mobile contract as above if so where would the BBM come from texts, minutes or data?

    Thanks

Although I don't own a Blackberry, I think any smartphone plan (i.e. one with enough data allowance) will cover a Blackberry.
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.
