Line 4 of the original post indicates that the phone was purchased in the UK.
But who knows? Sadly it seems to be an increasing trend on here for newbies to post garbled messages with minimal information-then never come back.No free lunch, and no free laptop

So I wonder if he purchased the handset here which is sim locked and tried to use a US Sim card in it?0 -

friend in usa said it would not work so I went back to orange & they confirmed it would work & roaming was set up.

So, did the phone work? and what was the phone? If the phone did work then your friend owes you $49 dollars for worrying you unnecessarily.
If the phone didn't work and the roaming was set up, then was there a network fault or a handset problem.0 -

So you bought a phone from Orange in the UK with a SIM and the handset was locked to Orange UK and asked them if it would work in the USA? The correct answer is yes as you can use the mobile phone in the USA with the UK bought SIM whilst roaming assuming it is a tri-band phone which most are.
Did your friend want to put in a SIM card bought in the USA and it didn't work? Well it wouldn't because its locked to Orange UK so the phone needs unlocking so it will work on any network.0 -

Ok lets start again as from the replies it seems I am wrong to expect any kind of service from Orange.
I went to Orange shop & bought a phone on their reccomendation . Monte Slider by Samsung.
On arranging my trip to see friends in USA I said I would contact them once I landed & gave my nos. The response from them was your phone won't work in USA.
I went back to Orange who ASSURED me the phone would work & I had roaming set up on my account.
I rang the Customer Service line expecting to get SERVICE not a load of computerised gibberish & finally sorry our office is closed even though it was supposed to be an international service.
To date all Orange have said on my return is the phone I was advised by them to buy would not work in USA & they will have words with whoever advised me that it would & now they are ignoring all contact.
Yes i am naive enough to think there should be such a thing as Customer Service.
I am not phone freak just a guy who wanted a phone that worked whilst abroad to contact those whom we were trying to meet up with in the middle of nowwhere.
Or is that too much to ask.0 -
It appears there is more than one Monte Sider model, so which is it. A tri band phone will give limited useage in the USA, you need a quad band phone for full USA useage. This is because some areas use 850 MHz and some 1900 MHz but not both in one area.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Orange have a habit of not knowing what phones will function correctly with them. My husband enquired as to whether a specific handset would work with their Sky Sports app, & was told yep, so spent £250 on a sim free version of said phone. It didnt work.COMP WINS FOR HUBBY & I SINCE SEPTEMBER:2 £50 DOMINOS VOUCHERS, 13 PAIRS OF FOOTBALL TICKETS, MICROSOFT HOME EDTN, 2 PAIRS OF ALTON TOWERS TICKETS, 1 CASE OF PERCY PIGS, 1 PAIR OF LEATHER LADIES GLOVES, 4 COLLECTION 2000 PRODUCTS, PLAYSTATION 3 WITH FIFA 12, 5* HOTEL STAY IN LONDON, SEASON 6 OF SUPERNATURAL DVD, PERFECT PIZZA VOUCHER0
