if you are in recepit of a qualifing benefit (ie state pension/pension credit etc) during the qualifing week of september it is sent automatically, you only have to claim if you are not in recepit of the qualifing benefit.

I think that must be it - my mother got the state pension when she turned 60.

I agree with an earlier poster that it should be means tested. A friend of mine is gets a very generous pension, has ample savings, a nice house which is paid for and he also has a house in South Africa which he goes to for the winter months, he is still getting the WFA !!!!!!. This is by no means an isolated case as i know a few people who are well enough off not to need it but get it anyway.
    Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.

That should be means tested as well.

Apparently the savings made by means testing universal benefits don't balance out with the additional costs in doing so.

there is far too many 'benefits'. Why not stop all benefits for working people and have a variable tax rate depending on income. This would reduce the number of DWP offices and therefore save money.
Life is too short to drink bad wine!
  • Child benefit is going from next year for higher rate taxpayers, though?
