If you want to try living without banks you're very welcome to Trucker. But bearing in mind the problems that started when the banks stopped lending, I think you might find it's more difficult than you think.
The banks' main purpose in a Capitalist economy is to lend!
But, like you say, they don't do it any more...

Sorry folks, but we dont have capitalism or a free market and we never have had one.0

I think it's easy to take a simplistic view and say all the big corporations - Tesco etc are making massive profits and so should be taxed higher. If these companies were doing as brilliantly as many seem to think would the stock market not be much higher rather than going nowhere over the last 10 years?
I personally think for the country to remain prosperous we need companies to be prosperous providing employment opportunities etc.
I agree that the rich in many ways are too rich etc and don't agree with the size of bankers bonuses but whatever way you look at it, the system works a lot better than any of the other alternatives.
The problems we are facing now whether we like it or not is not just down to the banks, it's down to government spending well beyond it's means. I can't see any other option than to cut back where we can and accept that going forward we are not as prosperous as politicians led us to believe we are!0 -

What is a straw man? Is it good or bad?0

Can you back that up with figures. I believe you are completely wrong.
Can you prove me wrong? There are so many noughts on the end of the figures that nobody knows the final answer
The need for the transcontinental government-to-bank bailouts was almost catastrophic at the time, we have been on the verge of catastrophe ever since, and the crisis continues to deepen
Why continue to focus on the past - this is an emergency, and it gets closer to home all the time
No western government has any clue at all about how to deal with the situation, and neither does anybody on this forum
The banks, however, could easily make a huge contribution if only their directors would spend less time enjoying our wealth, and more time looking at longer-term prospects - their failure to look beyond the short-term is what caused them to fail in the first place

What a nasty comment. Mind you, someone who has to brag about his supposed wealth in their signature speaks volumes to me.:p0 -

Just what I was thinking.
I hate this modern snobbery based on job occupation. Past winners of Mastermind included taxi drivers and truckers.0
