Jobcentres send you 90 miles for job?

I was told i had to look for work up to an hours travelling time or driving time in my case.
But how do they work it out though? I know I could get a lot further in an hour driving, than I could in the bus. The dammed thing goes all round the houses and takes about 45 mins just to get to town. In the car I'd be three quarters of the way to Middlesbrough!!
Would the criteria not be better in milage rather than time? Sort of a 30 mile radius type thing? Of course if people wanted to go further they could do, but nobody should be forced to! 0 -
You would work it out only when you are threatened with being sanctioned for not accepting a job offer. I would assume someone might turn a job down due to excessive travel. The jobcentre might see it as within 90 minutes. Google maps is an indicator although not accurate. Now it's up to the client to prove that the travel time exceeds 90 minutes. I can't get 30 miles in 90 minutes. 15 miles is the maximum for me it differs around the country and what transport is available. But how do they work it out though? I am sick of the absolutely stupid comments by self-righteous people on here who are obviously very comfortable with their lot compared to the unemployed, be they the blissfully ignorant several years retired types or employees of the still cosseted public sector. You haven't a clue what it is like for people who have to visit Job Centres in 2011. Not a flaming clue.
WELL SAID!!
My daughters school bus collects her at 8.15am, cue travel to work, then travel home to get back for the drop off at 4pm. If I had to travel 90 minutes there and back it would be a colossal waste of time!! I wouldn't earn enough in the time in between to earn a living!
How dare someone who knows nothing about individual personal circumstances get on their high horse about others being "work shy".
Absolute crock of :exclamati:exclamati
Ignorance.....:wall:

On the bus yes. 2 buses to get there and 2 short walks at either end for me one to get to the bus stop to get the bus to the bus interchange in town then another bus to get to a nearby city or another town with lots more jobs. Then a short walk to the employers premises.Oldernotwiser wrote: »You average less than 10 mph?:footie:

Blimey, I hope I never have to sign on! We are a one-car family as I work from home. There is one bus route in our village. It goes to one town and one city. The town takes 20 minutes. The city takes 1 hour 40 minutes. There are only four buses a day (the earliest you can arrive in the town is 8.45am, the city - other way - is 8.50am). The last bus leaves the town at 5.45pm and the city at 5pm. So, even with more than 3 hours travelling, you couldn't even do a 9-5 job in the city.0

I've driven 142 miles today and it should be 1hr 31mins each way, according to google.
It took us 1hr 50mins to do the 71 miles there and 1hr 35mins to come back.
Last time we went, it was bang on 1hr 30mins going and 2hrs 20mins getting home!
Exactly the same journey, same car, same number of people etc.
So how they can give a set time, I do not know!0 -
There is nothing to worry about. If you declare the car is not available you can turn down any job in the city that is offered to you without fear of sanction. If one was offered that paid well you are welcome to take it if you wanted it then drive there if you wished.Blimey, I hope I never have to sign on! We are a one-car family as I work from home. I'm well aware of that - I live on my own now and have to pay for everything myself and keep a tight budget. But you had a bed and food etc. Would you do the same if you didn't have money to spend on yourself OR pay your bills?
Living at home is a different kettle of fish entirely!
My point was that I was effectively travelling for nothing. What was the point?
If people are 1p better off (Or Even a nuetral cost) in work (After all costs) then they should be taking that job instead of sitting on the dole. Where all things considered people are worse off then I understand the motive for refusing to do the work or applying for the job.0
