Does anybody know how you could go about importing a Kindle from the US? And if I did such a thing, would it even work over here? I just tried the Amazon.com site, and it said that they couldn't ship a Kindle Touch to a non-US address, but presumably there are other retailers that would?

Onlyroz, someone on HotdealsUK just mentioned they ordered through here

They've kept it very quiet ;) in fact their marketing slogans are exactly the same!

It's incredibly difficult to choose an eReader. I know - I've spent the last three months researching it before I finally made a decision!

I'll make it slightly easier for ya - there's no point trying a Nook (Barnes & Noble). Their eBook store is only accessible by using a US-registered credit card, and their 3G only works in the US.

Thanks, OH just decided for the Keyboard himself. With 3G. Sorted!

So, would a Kindle Fire work in the UK or elsewhere in Europe if you used this site for delivery?

I've never said I used this site for delivery. I said someone else said that is what they used.
I am not 100% sure it will work, I know some tech guys ordered some and I bet they will be able to get them to work, but as I am not a tech guy I am going to cancel my order (that I ordered through my family in US as said earlier in this thread).
I am still the same person that keeps writing on this thread for the past 2 days....

OP asked how do you order from US, so I was trying to be helpful. I don't know whether it will work so I did not comment on that.

Sorry, I think you've read my post in a different way from which I meant it.

You seemed to know all about the technical side so I simply wondered whether it would work if bought (by me) in this way.

You have been very helpful and I appreciate it.

You would be able to read books, but its other features would be very limited. As a UK user, you would probably find that it's less functional than the older Kindles. The only 'benefit' would be a colour screen (which is harder to read from and sucks up battery power).

Ah I see, sorry I misunderstood.
I've done a lot of research and basicaly no one knows! Until someone actually tries to register it here. There is far too many unknowns.
People don't think it will function properly, no apps for now, only buying from US Amazon etc.. tho I am sure within months there will be videos on Youtube on 'how to':-)
But until then... I am canceling my order.
