As mentioned, if you're buying it from .com, you won't be able to buy books on .co.uk

My kindle was bought from .com and I often want to buy a book that is only available on .co.uk and it's not possible.

Can't you transfer it via USB or computer?
(not sure other Kindles have USB but Fire aparently does)

    - You should have a delivery address and credit card billing address for the country you've registered with. So if you're using an Amazon.com account you have to have a US credit card. If you're using an Amazon.co.uk account you have to have a UK credit card.

    - Kindle Fire has no battery life and isn't a full Android tablet - it's just a pointless device.

I have Amazon.com account with my UK card. Never had problem before... but I never bought digital before, however I did order beauty products etc with my .com account, US address and UK card and billing address. Wonder whether that will be different.

On the second point - it's a toy. Cheap toy for that matter. £120 for half way house. Wouldn't call that pointless!!

Yeah, it's the Kindle eBooks that make the difference. I also ran into trouble using a .com gift certificate to buy eBooks for my .co.uk registered Kindle app (on Android) - can't be done :undecided

Yeah, sorry - what I meant was that you could buy a nice Android tablet for the same price that can run Kindle but also work with all the other apps available and be more than just an eReader. Or you could buy a better Kindle (in my opinion) by buying one of the other models. I don't personally see a need for the Fire.

  • I've just bought the Kindle Keyboard 3G instead of waiting for the Touch or Fire. The reason is that none of the new Kindles allow you to browse the web over 3G anymore. For many people this might not be an issue, but I want to be able view articles when I am out and about. Looks like the experimental browsing feature over 3G was costing Amazon too much. I personally wouldn't bother waiting for them to arrive in the UK or buy them from the US.

A colleague of mine bought a US kindle and uses it here, it got a cracked screen while here and UK amazon did a low cost exchange as well without issue (often international warranties can be problematic getting things fixed)

I don't believe he's had any issues using it here via wifi etc.

The new Touch also has 3G? There are 2 types, 1 with and 1 without, just like the keyboard...

Might need to go for the Keyboard too... I just thought the new ones look prettier:)

Yes it does, but it's restricted: http://www.kindleboards.com/index.php/topic,85857.0.html

It has 3G capability, for which you pay an extra $50-ish, but you can only use that 3G network to download books from Amazon or browse Wikipedia.

The Kindle Keyboard 3G allows you to browse the web, access your email etc... all for free.

    Had no idea about that.

Bloody hell, how difficult is it to pick an ereader?? This is getting ridiculous now.. I've also been advised since to check the ebook stores of different makes!! :rotfl:
Next time I'll ask OH what he wants for present... NOT! Or tell him to give me specific instruction, with make, model and ID number!!:-))

Thank you, can you enlighten me on this a bit more please?

Yes, but this is the first Kindle relying fully on the Cloud, which they are having problems to get legit under EU laws... They say that is the reason why Fire has not been introduced to UK market.
So the previous Kindles are not affected by this issue.

I suppose they had to buy the US site because they have no local Amazon site? Not just because the device came from there?

Thanks for the explanation, I hadn't realised the difference.

When the Kindle was first launched, only UK buyers could buy from Amazon UK, everybody else had to buy through the US. I believe you can buy the new keyboardless Kindle through Amazon France now.

They've kept it very quiet ;) in fact their marketing slogans are exactly the same for both models!

It's incredibly difficult to choose an eReader. I know - I've spent the last three months researching it before I finally made a decision!

I'll make it slightly easier for ya - there's no point trying a Nook (Barnes & Noble). Their eBook store is only accessible by using a US-registered credit card, and their 3G only works in the US.
