Importing a Kindle from the US

Does anybody know how you could go about importing a Kindle from the US? And if I did such a thing, would it even work over here? I just tried the Amazon.com site, and it said that they couldn't ship a Kindle Touch to a non-US address, but presumably there are other retailers that would?

Don't forget that you will be charged carriage, plus duty and VAT on arrival plus a fee for processing by the courier/post.
If it is a standard Kindle you can buy a refurbished one from Amazon UK for around £80 with free delivery.0 -
You will most likely get stung for custom chargers and handling fees. My daughter ordered something from US it was just under £100 of clothes and she had to pay £30 in chargers, she wont make same mistake again0

There are no plans to release either the Kindle Touch or the Kindle Fire in the UK. The only way to get one in a timely manner would be to import but I don't want to do it if it won't work over here.0

From what I have read, kindle fire relies on Amazon Cloud, so seeing as amazon cloud is only US, then it wont be worth getting for the uk. Something to do with data protection laws here in UK and Europe.Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0

What about the touch though? Isn't that just the same as the "regular" UK Kindle, just with a touch-screen?0

I thought it is only a delay in getting that sorted?
As Amazon Cloud is just via net (my understanding) you can still use it in the UK, just the content will be US?
At least I hope so, as I am getting one as a gift..
Don't you know anyone in US OP? Fortunately I have family there.. That is how I am getting one.0 -
Cant see why the Kindle touch wouldn't work here, especially the wifi version.
As to the Kindle Fire, if you can hide your IP from them (as they use your IP to determine what country you are from) and get a US amazon account then you may be able to use there cloud system.
As for buying from USA, there are a number of sites which you can use, you buy through them. So buy the item you want, gets delivered to there address and they then send it on to you. As to Duty and VAT, that i dont know about, something you would need to check.Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0 -

I have read a lot on the net before ordering and no one suggests it won't work at all. Already have Amazon.com account, that is how I ordered it.
Now I hope it will work - I am not that much technical, but tech team from Guardian.co.uk already have some on order so obviously they must believe it will work (silly thing to rely on hey:D)0 -
Hope it does it work for you. But connecting to US site with a UK ip address is the problem. Lot of sites that have video content disabled to non USA users, due to copyright and legal issues, they do it by detecting IP address.
Only way 1 to find out though. If it does work, be good to find out.Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0 -

We will be the test rats then:D
My OH asked for the e-reader mainly for reading books and I didn't want to pay £149 for the big one with keyboard if this one costs £120 and you can browse net in colour as well... the only reason I ordered this one rather then the old style one!
(the new basic one is like an attempt by Amazon to annoy you as much as they can, why would they release that for the UK and not the Touch one as well????? What kind of the choice is that? Either you can have the old big one, or the one with 1 button...)0
