In essence, gas mantles are inefficient at producing light, better at producing heat.
Perhaps if they'd benefited from 80 years of further R and D that might not be the case, but we shall never know.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Also electricity cables are easier and cheaper to run to awkward places - imagine the amount of gas pipework you would need to feed your lights, pipework all vulnerable to a numptie DIYer with a hammer drill. Drill through a cable and you'll hopefully just take out your circuit breaker - worst case, you might get a fatal shock. Drill through a gas pipe and your entire house ends up a smoking pile of rubble, injuring you, your family and passers-by.

Electricity has its place and for convenience's sake, lighting is certainly it.

Carry on with your research - just not near me!

If they start extracting shale gas in a big way then you may not want to live in the north west any more...

I don't know about that, they could use the treated shale to cover over Blackpool and a couple of other towns I could think of - even fill in Old Trafford and make United move to the Far East.;)

I understand that the process of extracting the oil at Blackpool is known as hydrolic fracturing or “fracking” which involves pumping high pressure water deep into the ground. Here is a quote from the following link.

    http://www.bgs.ac.uk/research/earthquakes/BlackpoolMay2011.html
Any process that injects pressurised water into rocks at depth will cause the rock to fracture and possibly produce earthquakes.

It is well known that injection of water or other fluids during processes such as oil extraction, geothermal engineering and shale gas production can result in earthquake activity.

Typically, the earthquakes are too small to be felt, however, there are a number of examples of larger earthquakes occurring.
If I lived in Blackpool I would be very concerned. Does anyone know how many years this process is going to take and how will Blackpool be affected?

My mistake and thanks for the correction but even so it looks like the same process is going to be used to extract the gas, and the Blackpool area may suffer small earthquakes as a result. Already it appears that there’s been two small earthquakes earlier this year that may be related to this process. I hope the experts know what they’re doing.

Fracking has given us enough gas at current world usage to last another 250yrs!!!

Anyone else remember being told in the 80's that it would have run out by now? I do! :)
