  • You can get gas powered flood lights for outside events and incident lighting, you can even get gas powered roadside sign lighting for things like roadworks and temporary signs, you may find an answer there?

Gas lighting was, in many ways, far better than electric: supposedly the Victorian gas mantles produced excellent lighting.

However, it was less safe during the time it was superseded by electric. It also caused deposits - hence Victorian decor - as it derived from coal residue.

But electricity is, really, very cheap despite increases, especially with new lighting and tvs.

but we dont use coal gas anymore and with todays tecno maybe we can get better gas mantles who knows if the victorians could do it may be we could do better

Even if the technology was there, what about the cost of (re)running a gas supply to every room in the house? And the servicing and maintenance costs?
Not to mention the small matter that our domestic gas production is now in decline and we have to import it.

    Lighthouses were powered by gas.

You can run a generator from CNG engines.

If they start extracting shale gas in a big way then you may not want to live in the north west any more...

    Because it's hideously, hideously inefficient.
Gas is a third of the price (ish) of electricity.
A gas mantle has an output of 1 or 2 lumens a watt.
An incandescent bulb around 12, so even an incandescent bulb is 6 times better.
A CFL bulb is 30 times better, and the best LEDs (that you can't buy yet in the form of lights) 90 times!

So, even at a third of the cost, it's _lots_ more expensive.

I've noted elsewhere that 'green' people often tend to assume that newer tech = worse, and that it's a never-ending spiral of increasing energy use.

However, consider the energy cost of various common activities today.

To light the home to the same level as today, with candles, would take enough candles that you wouldn't need to worry about heating at all - the several tons of candles a year would be quite adequate.

To have a different song by a different musician every 4 minutes for a couple of hours a night would be quite expensive indeed if you had to bring them all to your house by horse.
