so you take advise from a so called comparison website owned by 1&1 Internet, Inc. rather than trade bodys and government departments
What he is saying is if all payment related information is handled by PayPal and all the credit card data etc entered is on the PayPal website you don't need a SSL certificate. Which is perfectly valid as you are not touching the details, your site doesn't even handle them.

SSL also encrypts the person details of clients and as 9/10 websites that use Paypal also take payments by other means.

i have been in this business since 1999 ands know what its all about and will never take any advice from a website that has been set up by another simple webhost and one that has a bad reputation.

what you on about. i do not sell anyones services. i run my own servers.

i have a couple of domains registered with fasthosts and thats all.

having a couple of domains with a domain registrar is totally different from taking note of ssl advice from a basic site setup by a hosting company without any knowledge of the subject.

guess what i use a thing called a telephone and call them to find things out rather that rely on sites run by simple web hosts without any knowledge, so stop trolling my posts.

Funny that as business link told me (over the phone) that if your website isn't processing the payment i,e your using paypal through the paypal site you DO NOT need an SSL certificate. Maybe they are in cahoots with 1&1 now.........
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.

That sounds fair. The HTTPS (SSL) encryption would be needed for the payment data. If you use something like paypal where the payment pages are hosted on their websites they will provision the encryption. This way you can just sit back and relax - Note that paypal (and others) fees are quite high bucause of the extra overhead they take on. One big benifit is that you distance your self from PCI (Payment Card Industry) compliance which can be a heavy load to bear.
  • Remember tax also - when i started selling on ebay it's something i tottally forgot about. Got to love the Inland revenue...

well i think its like alot of these organisation no one knows that the other one is doing.

when i initially enquired i was told it was a requirement, later when i caled i was advised that an ssl cert should be used as some comsumers will not purcvhase from a site without an ssl cert even if the site used a third party processor.

i myself do not just use paypal so i have all my ecommerce sites secured with an ssl cert.
