I was in the burnley one yesterday and they've all been fixed!
About time. I've checked the one in the sweets aisle every time I've been in.Sometimes the screens been blank, sometimes had a message to contact a member of staff and other times it's had the normal 'scan item' message - not sure of the exact words.Only common factor - whatever the message it's never been working.

A few people have made similar comments.

I was beginning to think the scanners would soon be a thing of the past so I emailed customer services a couple of months ago to ask what the 'official' policy was regarding scanners.

    The reply was -

Please accept my apologies for the delay in my response.

I am sorry to hear that the product scanners are not working in your local store at the moment.

What I have done for you today is I have spoken to my support team and they have advised me it is up to the store to make sure the scanners are fully working so our customer can use them quite freely.

I also agree that with the introduction with new technology on mobile phones it is very easy for our customers with Smartphones to use the app in order to find the product they are looking for in the store. I understand however, that a lot of customers do not have these phones and that’s why we must insure the scanners are fully operational.

I would like to discuss this with the store themselves so if you can let me know the store you had the problem in I will make sure the scanners are working properly for our customers to use.

Once again thank you for contacting us and bringing this matter to our attention and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

I checked the scanners every time I went in for three or four weeks only to find them all still out of order. I then gave up having decided that the main customer services were as bad as the instore ones.

Then a couple of weeks later -
    Hello,
I was in the burnley one yesterday and they've all been fixed! There's the one in the clothing, the one on the end of the cutlery (?) aisle and one on the sweets (?) aisle. If they're not on that aisle, they'll be an aisle or so away - I just don't remember exactly what was on the aisle :)

I've since been in to check for myself an all three scanners were working, including one near the back of the store that I've never known to be working before.

So despite my dislike of Tesco I'll have to give them credit on this occasion.

If your stores scanners are missing / broken then get on to customer services. It worked here.
  • Sandhurst store has just had a refurb - found a new scanner in aisle 14 (near the front of the store), only one I've found so far.

We now have an all-singing, all-dancing Tesco in Maldon and the scanner is now towards the back/left of the store in the aisle where the longlife milk and dessert items are.

Just like to add that I noticed Tesco Bidston do have a scanner near the homeware stuff!! Haven't tested it but when I went to check I wasn't seeing things I could see the red laser scanner light.
  • Both scanners have been removed at the Cheetham Hill store in Manchester. One was in the clothing section and the other was near the cereals.
