He wants three days off - 7th, 8th and 9th Nov. I assume the festival is three days long? Is that correct? I am trying to organise it but other staff (and as you now know I don't have many) have commitments too now so it's really hard but I am trying and always was going to. If others can't cover and his attitude is "I am taking it anyway".
And just to clarify from the posts just above this - I don't say I'd give it if he had a better attitude. I said I'd give it if others could cover him. Whilst his attitude saddens me it won't have a bearing on how hard I try to get him cover. If I can't get cover I would expect him (or anyone else asking in a similar situation) to work. He seems not to be willing to do so. Others have asked for short notice time off (bargain concert tickets at last minute, family needing a lift to an appointment, time to take cat to the vet, day off for school class assembly and many other reasons each important to the person asking) and when ever I can cover it I have when I can't they work.
i don't see why you should try and get cover.
He didn't mention it at the interview / when he started (especially as it was so soon after the last one)
He wants the time off
He left it till the new shifts were out instead of asking to take it into consideration
HE should be the one finding people to do a shift swap; but he's said he's having the day off regardless and you're the one left running round trying to sort it out.0 -

I agree with Scheming Gypsy; with the proviso that the employee is warned that, should he be absent on those days he risks dismissal.Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily Dickinson

Many times i have had Employers ring me saying we need you in today, xxxxx has not turned up, please help us, out of good grace and wanting to help my Employer i agreed to cover someone at extremly short notice, why is this any different to a reasonable, polite, hard working employee asking for a day for Eid at short notice? It works both ways, both parties should treat each other with respect and make allowances, however if the employee is just taking the !!!! then i agree you shouldnt push the boat out in trying to help him.
At the end of the day, when the !!!! hits the fan, both Employer and Employee need each other, so getting shirty over issues like this is not going to help is it.0 -

However I AM a lentil eating [I assume you meant lentils, rather than 'letils' of which I have no knowledge at all], sandal wearing [although at the moment, it's a little chilly round here for sandals] hippy. So does that mean that only hippies are allowed to know about faiths they do not believe in - as I have heard about this Christmas thingy and believe the whole bloomin country closes down for this ridiculous festival.
:rotfl::rotfl: - shall now spend time trying to get my head round this:rotfl:. Goes off to revise my mental definition of "hippy"...it must be one of those words that has changed definition since my time...always used to mean "peace and love ...man".0 -
