Nothing to do with religion, so no further need to bicker about it!

Who is bickering? I'm having a lovely conversation. :D
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

What's that when it's at home?

it speaks volumes however about those who can't properly articulate a counter view and have to resort to insults.

So as you've decided to start personally insulting ceridwen, we can only assume that you're having trouble with your own articulation. Either that or you're a complete hypocrite

I was hoping this thread had gone back on topic but clearly not. Thanks to those who contributed constructively.

To update - had very strong words with the employee yesterday who is now well aware of the impression his comment made. He has apologised. He seemed genuinely surprised. His conduct other than this has been superb. I continue to endeavour to arrange things so he can be off and he gets one more chance.

I am out of the thread now as I don't feel comfortable with the arguments that are going on that are not at all on topic. Shame as I would have genuinely liked to wait for any thoughts on improving our holiday process/policy as it's received unexpected criticism but nobody has yet come up with a workable alternative. Maybe I will start a new thread for that!

    Thanks again.

    Quite!

The sad thing is that the individuals involved in this argument are regular posters on here who normally contribute constructively.

I don't see what this has to do with religion.

Employee was asked before starting job if they required any time off, and employee said no.

Employee now wants time off, and can have it IF they find someone to cancel their hol.

Employee threatened to not turn up anyway, which would be a fair enough reason to sack them.

Nothing to do with religion, so no further need to bicker about it!

Very true. I use my own annual leave to take time off for some Jewish holidays. Would never expect last minute time off. It's your own responsibility to ensure you are off when you need to be.

However, I would say that it would be nice if more employers took not of religious calendars. We once had an annual fun day scheduled for Eid/rosh hashanna. So in one swoop, they alienated all Jewish and Muslim employees.

But I don't think that the employee is asking for paid leave off for the holiday and 6 weeks' notice is hardly last minute.

I totally agree with your last comment and think that this sort of knowledge would be part of an employer's equal opportunity policy.

I'll play nicely when people stop posting bigoted, nationalist and disrespectful comments. Until then I will challenge that attitude wherever it raises its head.

    that's exactly what I thought.

I would also consider other implications such as possible fasting over Ramadan. If they do a job that is physically intense or potentially dehydrating, then this should be risk assesed with them as an individual.

Now wait until they want a whole month off for a Haj.

All these things can be accommodated for with reasonable discussion.
