how much will they stop out of dla. 4 a small..car..plz..dont no anything about the cost of getting a car from them plz xxx
Almost all of the available cars use all of your HRM payment - 51.40/week.
http://www.motabilityonline.co.uk/ - only 5 pages out of the 74 pages of cars do not take it all.
The Kia Picanto is the cheapest - at 44.95/week.
This leaves you only around 7 quid/week of the HRM though.
Still - if you can live with it - or a few similar models - it's 7 quid a week.0 -
6 months since I took my Ford Galaxy and I have to say that I was on the fence so to speak for years dithering over the pros and cons of the scheme, all I can say is what a relief not having to worry about any aspect of owning a car, probably one of the best decisions I ever made I can now concentrate on more important things.0

Possibly awaiting an award of HRM here, and I can't sanely consider motability.
Simply as I consider it very likely that during the 3 year term I would have to appeal to get back my HRM, during which time I'd lose the car.
If you've got a disability that is inarguable - for example for HRM 'I have no feet' - then it's a much simpler decision.0 -
I think the choice between buying/keeping a private car and getting one from Motability would depend on a number of things, such as what condition is the current car in and how much NCB is there on the insurance. If the car is good, the NCB is pretty high and adaptions aren't needed, or aren't expensive, then I would say don't go for the scheme. However, if you don't have a car, or the car is old and not much life left, little NCB or the adaptions would be expensive, then I would say Motability is worth a look.
Personally, I didn't have a car and the adaptions on a reasonable car (Focus/Astra type, ie normal household car) were going to cost me in excess of £1200. So the car, plus adaptions were looking expensive, so I got a Focus in April 2010 with the adaptions because it made sense and I was looking at the chance of going back to work.
The chance of going back to work is going a bit downhill (even ATOS didn't reply after my last ESA50, they just passed it straight through as a 'stay on ESA') and the fact I don't go out much anymore means I probably won't get a car when it comes around for renewal (assuming I pass DLA/PIP) and instead spend the money on bus and taxis. After a while, if I want a car again, I would look to buy one and adapt it, mainly because the biggest problem I have had with Motability is the insurance company RSA, I'm now at 15 months since a taxi changed lanes into my car's side and had no resolution. That simply wouldn't happen if I had the choice of insurer.0 -
Well I've made my decisions having sat down and worked out costs etc. For me there is very little in it as to buy or motability on a pure financial basis. This takes into account basic costs, maintenance and depreciation.
However the depressing part of how much I've spent on my current car its clear I need to change it before it next costs me a fortune.
I've therefore decided I shall go on the buy route. Why? When motability would remove the stress of organising car to garage, insurance etc well its simply with PIP coming in I dont want to go through the stress of what if my DLA gets pulled and goes to appeal etc. My issues are not visible and at extreme end of the normal expectations for my illness. I would have full hospital support for evidence etc but with nothing in it financial and currently some good deals out there for my desired car I'm going the slightly less stress route.
Chorlie tips please on your suggestion of motability discount as to how to go about it!0 -
I'm not sure you can now, when I bought my old one it was 15yrs ago and you could request a price direct from Motability to buy it from them when you took delivery of the car, so I knew how much I needed to save over 3yrs to buy it (it was the same price as the Advanced Payment for a new one).
Yes you can. We VERY recently bought my last motability car, the transaction was very easy, and the price they sold to us was, I think, very reasonable.I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say.0 -

To get the Motability Discount on a car, is very easy; just ask the dealer. Tell him you get HRM but want to buy a new car and if the car is on the Motability list you are entitled to the same discount as Motability gets.
You're best phoning the dealer up and they should be able to tell you the percentage over the phone.0 -
Hello Chorlie,
Could I please ask where you got this information as the dealers I have spoke to know nothing about it. I am worried about all this PIP thing coming in and looking into buying a car instead of motability. A shame really as it's a great scheme but all the changes and how the goverment are treating the diabled has me worried. Thanks for any help and advice given

There doesn't seem to be anything written down and some dealers don't seem to know / understand since most people just go the Motability route.
I've bought several cars this way, so I know you can. Vauxhall were one who told me you can't and after days phoned back and said oh I found out you're right (told him, to late I've bought a Ford).
Best to speak to the Motability guy at the dealer and state you want to buy a car but you get HRM so you're entitled to the Motability Discount and what % is it on 'X' car. He should have a sheet with all the car, the Motability rates / advanced payment and also the % discount if bought privately.
If he says 'NO such thing' ask him to double check (because there is) or you'll go to another deal who knows about it. You'll find the likes of BMW, Volvo, Merc know more about this since it's normally done one the high end Motability car (the discount will be bigger, because the car is more expensive). But this may not be the cheapest way to buy a new car, since the manufacturer maybe be offering a bigger % discount via another offer (ie they pay the VAT on the car).
Like I said, best to phone around a few dealer (any make) and one will know what you're talking about, so therefore you'll know it's true and it's easier to argue it out with your chosen dealer (but it's is only on car on the Motability list).0 -
Thanks again Chorlie. have PM you but I've failed so far to find the motability discount at either garage I've tried. Any further clues I can use. I'd been dreaming of that car but perhaps its not to be or I'll have to find more cash than I'd hoped.0
