- yes you can buy, a mate of mine was quoted and agreed to buy his 3 year old just last week !
Was it any cheaper then buying (the same type of) 3yr old car (milage etc) secondhand?
When I bought mine it was about the same price as the same car secondhand, but since I knew the history and it was adapted it was a better buy.0 -

Not much cheaper, but like yourself it was brand new top of its range [ no adaptations ] with all the toys when he received it, is still megga low mileage, and no one else has ever driven it.
So .. .. when he asked me the same question as is being asked in this thread I explained :
- the impending PIP / whatever happens next scenario from the CONdems WRB and its eventual implementation
- taking everything into account the 2 best options were (1) sack the Motrability contract and buy his own vehicle (2) buy his existing Mortability vehicle in Sept 2011
Buying the existing vehicle will save :
- risking the loss of an up front additional £1,695 cash payment [ in addition to his DLAHRM ] for a new vehicle if PIP / whatever goes wrong for him
- keeping hold of the benefit of the almost similar £1.5k up front money he has already paid for his existing vehicle if PIP / whatever goes wrong for himDisclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. These were the same reasons I bought the car from Motability (not PIP, but unsure if I'd still get the allowance etc), so I bought the car and run it for another 3yrs before selling it and buying an Ex. Demo which I got VAT Free, then I just bought my cars (all VAT free, either new or Ex. Demo / Pre Reg) and my allowance more than covers the cost of running the car (including fuel).
I can't see myself going back to Motability.0 -

Not knowing you or your reasons can you explain how you got VAT free as I thought that only kicked in if you had adaptations. Dont want to miss something that could be huge financial issue. The only things I've managed to get VAT free so far is nebulisers!0 -
That £2400 servicing covers 3 MOT's (£150), 4 tyres (£640 - high performance run-flats), battery (£130 - for a BMW E90), an exhaust (£395), 3 services (£660) and associated repairs/replacements (£425).
I bought a Citroen Picasso 03, 3 yrs back, 46 k on clock , tax disc free, 3 MOTs £150.. 2 services , 3 @ £110 each, tyres all ok, average 20 thousand miles in 3 yrs , economical, diesel. Insurance fully comp £211 per yr ............
So really my life style dont warrant a new car paying £225? motability money per month.................the car gets me about ,a good all round a to b er , nothing speical to look at but it does the job........it all depends on what the individual wants, I dont like the thought of paying for something for 3 yrs and its not yours at the end of the contract, and a lot of the better model cars you have to put down an advance payment lump sum, something else you dont get back at the end of agreement...........as I say its works for some people and not for others.........
If you wish to buy the car after the 3 yr ends they ask quite a lot for the car, but all motability cars end up in auction where they go for peanuts to what they expect you to buy it for.......0 -

That's correct, you have to be a permanent wheelchair user and the car has to be adapted to either enter/exit, ride in or drive.
I'm a wheelchair user (can't walk at all) and the car has to be fitted with Push/Pull Hand Controls for me to be able to drive it.
So I get it VAT Free, if it's a VAT qualifying car (New, Pre Reg or Ex Demo) along with the Adaptions, Servicing, Parts/Repairs etc.
On top of that, you can still haggle with the dealer and get what you can off the car price (and maybe get the Motability Discount off it also), so I can get anything from 25% to 35% off the list price (On The Road Price) of a car, depending on Make, Model and what offers they have on the car.0 -
Get a feeling it will be haggle lots and use possible cash payment as my lever although if same deals available on 0% finance money can earn a little interest. And most likely ex-dem or pre-registered car as my aim though if they'd like to match those deals with a new car I will not argue.
Thanks Chorlie for clarifying the VAT issue. Not something I can use.0 -

You can't use that, but you can (and not everyone knows this, or even the car dealers) get the Motability Discount, if you're entitled to a car via Motability Scheme.
If you buy a NEW car and that same car is on the Motability list, then you are entitled to the same level of discount that the manufacturer gives to Motability for that car (this tends to range from around 7.5% to 12.5%), it differs not only from manufacturer to manufacturer but also from model to model. This discount will come off the Pre-VAT price and then the 20% VAT added. I will point out that this still might not be the cheapest way to get a NEW car, some manufacturers are advertising things like they will pay the VAT on the car, which they aren't they can't by law (VAT has to be paid), but what they are doing is giving a discount which is the same as the VAT amount (ie 20% off the Pre-VAT price of the car and then adding VAT to that discounted price), so if you bought that car you would in fact be getting 20% off and not the 7.5%-12.5% using the Motability Discount; however you do get a far bigger range of cars to select from when using the Motability Discount.
And you can still haggle, so may get another 5% off direct from the dealer or extras added for free (Matts, Flaps, Fuel, 1st Service etc).
Lastly don't forget On-line deals, from the likes of https://www.drivethedeal.com even if you don't buy direct from the online dealers it's a great bargaining tool to use (ie Match this Price or I'll go else where).
So YES you can get a NEW Car for Pre-Reg / Ex. Demo Prices....0 -
Hi only just picked up this thread must admit havn't read all the posts but got the gist,My husband is disabled and we bought a good secoundhand car outright with a small inhertance plus the money from the sale of an old car 3 yrs ago and over that time adding all the expences we have paid out repairs, tyres ,etc comparing it with buying an equivalent car through mobility we saved approx £ 1,500 per year,of course it depends on the mileage you do and the insurance costs but just going by personal experience we found it better this way and will purchase a new car when needed.I do all the driving as he can't drive anymore and as he himself has said if anything were to happen to him I would still be able to keep the car.0
