Hi,
I made a minimum payment online for my Capital One payment on Friday, through my debit card early because the direct debit may have a problem this month going through.
However, the website still shows my next payment is due on 13/10/11? (The usual date for the direct debit). I did this on Friday afternoon, is it not likely to update properly until Monday or will I need to contact them to say I have made the payment by debit card this month?
Thanks

It may be that Capital One may disregard the debit card payment and still take the DD. Have you asked them what their policy is on additional payments?
When you say "the direct debit may have a problem this month going through" what exactly do you mean? Reason I ask is that you'll incur a £12 fee for a returned DD if they call it...even though you've paid by other means.0 -

Some direct debits are automatically taken by the system regardless of whether a payment has been made or not.
You might find yours is taken.0 -
I've made a payment and my account still says there is a 'Minimum payment due'?
The 'Minimum payment due' information will always be stated on the account service screen, even if the payment has been made. It is only updated on a monthly basis when you receive your new estatement. For online payments, check the Online Payment History log at the bottom of your Make a Payment page to see if the payment request was submitted and if it has been successful or not.
That clears it up a little, I'll give them a ring to double check though
When I say I've got a problem with the direct debit this month potentially, HSBC have placed bank charges on the account the DD comes out of this month and I won't be able to resolve the balance until after the C1 DD is due to come out.0 -
The DD batch is made up a few days before the due date and then transfered to the bank they are collecting this from.
It's not real-tinme/instantaneous.
They generally collect up all the details a few days before (5) put them in a batch and then send it off.
If your payment hits before the batch is created then it will be taken into account.
If your payment doesn't show up on the system/computer when the batch is being created then it won't be taken into account.
I'm sure different banks have slightly different timescales, but I don't believe it's done individually on in real-time.
The info is collected before into a batch for that bank.0 -

Reason I ask is that MBNA et al totally disgard additional payments made and will still take whatever they said they'd take on the statement by DD.0 -
I was generalising.
I haven't ever tried it with Capital one I'm afraid.
So if in doubt it's best to call them and ask.0 -

Capital One banks with HSBC as well so there is no need for DD as you pay through internet banking the money is received Capital One instantly and is updated on your account same day.0 -
Last time I made a manual payment to a Capital One card, the direct debit was not taken for that month. Or the month after, and then I got a £12 'Late payment' charge. Turns out the bank (Nationwide) decided to deactivate the DD payment. I questioned this and all I got was "If a DD is not used in a period of time, it will be deactivated for your security".
This meant that when I requested the 5% cashback card for a planned large purchase, I was refused (Although of course I can't say 100% it was due to this as they don't say why, they just say "You can't have that card, but we can offer you our stupidly high interest rate card with no benefits.")
So now I always ensure I leave something on the card every month.0 -
I have a Capital One card and I also pay by D/D each month, on my statement it does say that if you pay a sum during the month (providing that sum doesn't pay off the debt) the D/D will still be taken.
As a result I just leave the payment as the D/D each month.0 -

Although this is a different scenario,I have DD set up with BT and always pay one off payments to them, making it the case that my bill is usually clear before it arrives and before they are due to take the DD amount out of my account.BT dont take the DD amount out when the bill is clear or even ahead.Regardless of this I would ring Cap1 just to be on the safe side.I am with Cap1 too but dont have a DD set up with them.I pay them by one off payments every 2 weeks.I have found this to be a good way for me to make sure they have always received a payment to cover the month.I am thinking that If youve paid them through their own website then it would probably have went through on time. But again,i would ring them to be sure.At least it would be an insight for anytime it happens again in the future. Please let us all know how you get on john.0
