..... a neighbours door to ask that they turn their music down?

We live in a semi but our door is at the side and we don't see our neighbours, we are the last house on our street. They are a young couple who only moved in earlier this year and DH has spoke with the lad only once when gardening and seemed nice enough.

I was in bed the other Friday, DH was out, and at turned 11pm the music came on, not that I would call thud, thud music - maybe I am showing my age there;) I got dressed to go and knock on but just as I was about to go out I noticed the girl going in and the music went off.

Tonight at 7:50pm it has started. It is louder than the telly and very, very, thud, thud, annoying. They must know we have children!!! The boys are in bed at 7pm every night. The other week the boys woke up and said "we could hear "I think I want to marry you (Bruno Mars song) when we went to bed"..... they are 4.

So is it unreasonable of me to go and ask then to turn it down at this time when my boys are in bed ?

I will be polite and just ask they they turn it down as we have children in bed but what is your take at 8:10pm?

Thanks in advance

I'd say around 10/11 o clock at weekends, maybe 9/10 during the week. We have noisy neighbours but I give them the benefit of the doubt and try not to get irrate until I feel it's getting on a bit. That said we don't have any children yet.

You should go and say something when your children go to bed, they have maybe not lived in a non detached property before (having come from parents etc) and maybe don't realise how noisy they are being.

Not sure what the time limits are during the week but i think at the weekend you'd be pushed to get anyone to do anything before half 11 (this came up at a party i was at last night where the neighbours complained :o )

  • About 2 in the morning on weekends. Have complained when someone was still going strong at 3.30am.

About 10 on weeknights. After 1.30am, I would be looking for the main fusebox.

And if it was becoming a problem, I would accidentally have my music on at around 9am in the morning, just in case they were still sleeping.

My children are older than yours and I have lived in flats for most of my adult life. Expecting people to not have music on at 8 in the evening isn't really feasible.

Mention the late music by all means, but knocking off the louder music is about 2100 , they are your neighbours too and you can't expect them to live their lives to suit your children :o

10 mins after it starts. if its still going on, go and ask them to turn it down.

that said you may end up on the receiving end if your kids grow up to be noise machines.

they probably don't realise how it's carrying to your house. Give them a knock and say 'Sorry to trouble you and I'm sure you haven't realised, but your music is shaking the pictures on my walls. You probably think I'm exaggerating, but would you pop round and listen so you realise what it's like.'

I would mention it to them just incase they don't think it's loud, but I wouldn't expect them to turn it off and be silent for some children next door at 8pm.

I think it's about 11pm when the police will step in if it's too loud. I'd leave it till then and then knock round to ask them to turn it down, unless you are on speaking terms and can mention it the next time you see them.

I wouldn't even think of complaining before midnight
