Do I owe enough

Options
Hi hope I'm posting in the right place.
I am a single parent and work part time, I owe about £1200. I find it very difficult to make ends meet each month. I am paying off my capital one card which is one of the high percentage cards also paying off 2 previous debts to Lowells and Direct legal.
My question is what sort of help could I get with these debts (I'm not in arrears with anything at the moment) I don't think I owe enough for an iVA so is there anything else available.

Do you mean £1200, or £12000?

I don't think you will get much assistance for that amount of debt

i don't think you really need it either, why are you seeking help? the repayments cant be that much, cant you transfer it all to a 0% credit card and clear it down?

Your best bet (failing switching to an interest free introductory rate on another card and clearing as much as possible off the balance before interest kicks in) is to try for a DIY Debt Management Programme. As you have only a few creditors for modest amounts they might agree to freeze charges for a period, giving you chance to get ahead on payments.

Do you have any CCJs? You may be eligible for an Admin order instead. IVA definitely out, bankruptcy costs £700 in normal circumstances anyway so you'd be likely to be refused, and really even a DRO is a bit extreme for such a small amount of debt. Without knowing your financial circumstances it's impossible to say whether a admin order or DRO is appropriate anyway.

    Thanks for that.
I've never heard of an Admin order, but I'll give a little bit of info about my circumstances and if you're kind enought to advise if you think it's worth me looking into it.
I'm a single parent with 2 children the youngest is still at school but the older one is working at the moment, he hopes to go to uni next year to study paramedic science and part of the requirement of the course is that he works in a care/medical setting for 2 years before the course so he is working at the local hospital on the nurse bank ( only averaging 18 hours per week).
I work part time, so get tax credits and a little housing benefit plus what my son gives me for his (keep).
The problem is that just to pay the bills each month I have to dip into the next months rent so have to pay more out of next months wages to make up the rent. My ends just don't meet anymore.
Also just wondered whats the worst thing that could happen if I stopped paying cc and debt recovery people? I don't have any ccj's yet

    Sorry it's a bit long.

If you don't have any CCJs then you can't apply for an admin order. I you stopped paying the creditors then there's still no guarantee they'd go for a CCJ any time in the future anyway, especially if you don't owe much and have no assets.
From your situation it sounds as though you'd be better looking at ways to increase your income and reduce your expenditure so might be worth posting your financial statement over on the debt free wannabe board.

Firstly I don't think my credit is good enough to get a O% card and secondly without knowing my circumstances how can YOU DECIDE IF I NEED HELP???
Forgive me for asking for help on a forum that offers advice and help!!! or so I thought.

I think that reply was a bit unfair....

As you said Carl31 didn't know your circumstances so to reply like you have when Carl31 offered you advice based on the little information you gave is out of order!

Sorry but I had to post that, this site is invaluable when it comes to advice especially as the people you are asking advice from ...majority... have been in the same situation!

Have you tried to get a 0% interest card? Have you contacted Capital One and discussed your situation? Back when my debt was only small they were quite helpful, its worth a shot...

    Hi Jilly

I agree with I_A that it would be worth popping over to the debt free wannabe section and posting up a statement of affairs. Hopefully people on there will be able to make some suggestions on saving money / getting things cheaper etc to help your income & outgoings balance for starters, and then look at ways to tackle your debts.
