Thank you for this, me and the other half have discussed and its clear recall is something which will need more work (although if I didn't have a garden the size I do I do wonder how exactly I would train recall without a forest to go to ;))

they look like Jack Russell dogs which are used to drag rabbits out of their burrows aren't they? I am very wary of these dogs if i come across them as they are likely to give you a good nip

Ah yes all dogs are the same when aprt of the same breed - very blinkered view I must say.
Thank you. I'm more than happy with my little comment.

It may well look like that's what he's saying now, after all the amends of his original post.

Stop enciting people, specifically me - I haven't amended my original post for ages, loook at the last edit time versus your posts - you got it wrong, but won't admit it.

    Pot, kettle, black.

Anyhoo - the good advice above is noted, going to stop on the issue now, not going anywhere, can see elements I got wrong and for those who constructively fed back I appreciate it.

    Thanks again to you.

Best of luck to you and your dogs and I really do hope he is ok.
  • I love all animals but lately I'm seriously getting peeved off with irresponsible dog owners who allow their dogs to chase after me when I'm jogging in the park.

I'm sick and tired of them saying "why are you over reacting? it won't bite you", that's not the point I want to run in peace without getting the sh1tters up me that one day I'll get mauled.

Long leads, then secluded areas, then finally more public places.

Training classes are never a bad idea, even if your dog's older, although they always know the difference between class and 'real life' and never perform as well in the latter!

Dogs are becoming scapegoats and pariahs in our society after thousands of years of loyalty and service, its very sad to see so much anti-dog sentiment even on a board dedicated to pets and pet care!

I am a dog lover, have one now but in the past have had two at a time. I never let my dogs jump up at people or bother them. I no more assume everyone likes dogs than that they all love kids. Regarding the grandfather lifting the child,at the moment I have a problem with my right arm, I couldn't lift my grandson at the moment although I normally would to keep him safe. Perhaps the grandfather was in the same position.

I am sorry for you dog, not nice being kicked, but I think you are so angry because you know you let this happen. Dogs need to be properly trained before they are allowed off the lead for their own safety.

Just to add, I will never forget a friends little boy who was bitten on the face by a small terrier. It was his grandmothers dog and she had never had a problem with it but one day he bit the 3 year old on the face and wouldn't let go. The little boy's eye was nearly ripped out and his face was a terrible mess. Changed that child's life forever. I am always wary of terriers when I am with a child.

Having your dog on a lead is no guarantee that someone isn't going to freak out about a dog being in their vicinity and lashing out. My dog was on a lead at close heel when he was punched hard in the head by a lunatic who freaked when HIS hand banged into the top of my dog's head (my dog's head being hip height on the average person) as we passed each other in a 3ft wide cut-through alley. Having punched my dog, who frantically tried to scurry behind me (and failed given the width of the alley) I was then treated to a full volume diatribe by the lunatic about having my 'dangerous dog muzzled'.

I've also experienced a woman screeching at me to 'keep my dog away' - again when he was on a lead at close heel, plodding along minding his own business - simply because we had the audacity to be walking towards her on the same path and she obviously had a 'thing' against big dogs walking past her brood.

Anyway Op - my general rule of thumb is that if people are around, the lead goes on. At least then you only have to contend with the possibility that one of the kids will make a bee-line for you and if that's the case, if you're so minded you can get your revenge by screaming "Get your kid away!!!!" at the top of your lungs. I'd also say be thankful you have little dogs....you want to see the reaction you get from dog-phobics when it's a 12 stone Mastiff coming into their line of sight.

  • you should be angry with yourself for letting your dogs (not puppies - they are dogs so stop with the emotional crap) off the lead when you cant control them. its your fault they were kicked. they ran off, you called them back but they ignored you and went back. i cant actually blame the grandfather for trying to protect his grandson from your out of control dogs. nor do i blame your dogs. i blame you and your wife. who despite both being there for some reason were unable to keep your dogs under control and see where they were at all times.

It's a shame that we don't have dog parks in the UK as they have in the US. I think it was a pretty stupid thing for the chap to kick a dog he didn't know - to be honest he could have been bitten himself!

When I take my dogs out I'm always happy to let children stroke them (supervised of course!) if they ask. Children for the most part aren't frightened of dogs, it tends to be something they learn from adults. When children are shown how to behave around dogs and how to behave around dogs that may not be quite so friendly, it's far safer than showing them the kicking dogs is ok!

A nasty experience with a dog when a child will colour someone's view forever, but alternatively a dog-filled childhood can teach children so much. My kids had that, and I have no regrets, they loved the dogs we had while they grew up.
