I figured I would get that reply - and I do agree with you, although I disagree it was only us that had to do something, there was no risk to them with our dogs running up, they are friendly and merely saying hello.
This 'person' appeared and shouted to get the dogs off them (they were round their feet, just like the other dogs in the woods) he had the same opportunity to lift his grandson up if there was a concern - owner and grandparent, equal expectation.
He didn't see to take kindly to me suggesting I kick his grandchild if it ran up to me.
Sorry, did not read the whole thread but your opening post and the one above BUT - I absolutely do nto agree with you.
YOU may think it is ok for YOUR dogs to run up to strange people "just to say hello" but it is absolutely NOT ok. Ever.
People have every right to be scared, those are YOUR dogs not theirs, they do NOT know if the dogs are ok or not and frankly they do not need to know. They have every right to a nice peaceful walk in the woods without having to pick up their kids/dogs when YOUR dogs run up to them.
Frankly this is a major pet hate of mine while I walk Zara - other people's dogs running up to her at full speed with the owner miles away shouting "they are friendly only want to play" - well, MY dog does not and I do not want to have to deal with other people's dogs.
As to kicking the dog - YOU have put your dogs in that position. It does not make it right but still YOU have put YOUR dogs in the position to be kicked by another person who just felt threatened for himself and/or the child.0 -
Do you have any idea how often I have unsupervised children run up to my dog to pat him? They don't ask, they just run at him.
Oh yeah, thee's an adult nearby in charge of the child, but is it properly controlled? No. They just allow it to run up to my dog and harass him, hands straight out, faces right up at his, no idea how to approach a dog, and I'm not talking a terrier, I'm talking a 6 1/2 stone, 2 1/2 foot tall dog that's usually bigger than they are.
Should I kick them? I think there are reasonable grounds that I should. the children aren't being properly controlled, my dog is scared of them, I want to protect him, should I just lash out?
I swear to god, that day anyone lifts a hand or a foot to my dog, they'll get it right back.
No one knows how anything is going to react be it child, dog or donkey, we don't have the ability to see the future. And if I think my dog is okay off the lead and yet one day he does something that I couldn't foresee, I'm not any more in the wrong than someone who lets their child run up to a dog and stick it's finger in their eye when they've never done that before.0 -
I let my Jack Russell off the lead , only when there is no one around , not because he is dangerous , far from it . He loves to run up to other dogs to play , but I am aware that other people might not like that so i always put him back on the lead as soon as i see or here someone approaching .Vuja De - the feeling you'll be here later0

The difference being if a child loses control its not likely to savage your dog is it !Vuja De - the feeling you'll be here later0 -

Sure but that is for a tottaly different thread. And I know what you mean as Zara is quite a big dog (GS) and this happens sometimes to us too.
BUT - THIS kid did not run up to THOSE dogs.0 -

Nope, however the point being the kids COULD have just as easily run up to the dogs, should the OP just have kicked the kid?0 -
NOpe - the point is what actually happened and not what might have happened.0

Okay, so the dogs ran over to the kid and....
They didn't do anything did they?
There's just a complete overreaction from an adult in charge of a child, who'll probably now have a complex about dogs.0 -
NO it it was not overeaction from an adult who was in charge of a kid and was himself scared/scared for the kid.0
