We recently got a PRS License at work, but not one of those PPL things, first I've heard of that!

    Why do you need both?

Our PRS license cost us about £100 even though the only radio played is from my pc through little speakers, which only I can hear and always gets muted when customers come in. The cost they stated was based on number of employees (7) and that the unit I work in is effectively a shop:(

Was curious about this myself, so i checked the requirements for both License and I would say the OP would require a PRS License for £44, if he only intend's to play the radio.

PPL License is for recorded music, so if he was to play his CD's or what ever format there in, then yes he would require 1. But to just play a radio then PRS License is required.

The cost of admin for these licenses and the individual assessments must by close to the the amount being received. Jobs for the boys and practically no money for the musicians I suspect.

In a pub or restaurant one could half understand this, for private use in a workplace, bonkers.

So if 5 people each work from home & have radio & TV blaring there, no cost.
If same 5 gather in a room, not 1 but 2 licenses needed?

    Entitlement culture + legalised scam.

Not so much gather in a room, more to do with business use.

Just imagine then a retail chain with hundreds of shops, each requiring a licence.

But yeah it is crazy though, what happened to the days when you had a small workshop and you simply turn the radio on. Makes you wonder then if you work in garage and turn the car radio on, do you still need a license?

The Answer to the question is NO you do not need a licence, your employer may do, however I would suspect that if you were to bring your firm to the attention of these sharks who would issue retrospective invoices probably for several thousands of pounds then the only thing you would have to worry about applying for would be your p45 and holiday pay.
