Have enjoyed reading these ideas/tips and will admit to many of them.

When eating out I rarely finish. ............ If the kids are with us then my plate usually makes it's way round the table with everyone having a bit.

Me too! Husband & 16 yo son now make a start on my plate when they are finished before I even offer it round :D

I always take anyone's meat that will give it to me home for the dog when eating out - I'm a veggie so its a real treat for him to have leftover meat instead of dog food.

Just reread that - I don't go around the restaurant asking people! Just people that I'm actually with!:rotfl:
  • this is a great thread. i do quite a lot of these things already but there are so many more i hadn't thought of.

here are a few of mine.

-i wash out my butter tubs and keep for freezing things or storing little bits and pieces of toys that have small parts like lego or jigsaws

-when my son was born i bought a packet of microfibre cloths in the car care aisle in a*da. i think there were 12 cloths (4 of each colour) and they were big enough to cut into four smaller squares each so i had 36 reusable baby wipes. they just go in the washing machine at 60 degrees. i use them for runny noses, changing nappies, washing hands and faces, taking my won make-up off. definitely cheaper than buying diposable wipes for all those tasks.

-i use all my old cloth nappies for cleaning. they have been cut up smaller so i have loads of cloths.

-i wear clothes until they are actually dirty rather than washing after wearing for a few hours. hang them on my curtain rails during the day and they are line fresh by the evening. no need for febr**ze.

-i keep water in the bath and kitchen sink until it cools to let the heat warm the room

-i have trained my hair to only need washing every 4 days. it might sound yuck but it isn't. i used to wash it daily as it was always oily by the next morning but i started letting it go for 2 days and once it got used to that (stopped being oily) i upped it to every 3 days. i am currently on 4 days and still training. it also saves me a fortune in hair colours as it doesn't fade anywhere near as quickly as it used to.

-i used to be a slave to the hairdryer and straighteners but now i let my hair air dry as often as possible. i have also learnt how to blow dry it so that i dont even need to use the straighteners at all. and blow drying is saved for if i have a (rare) night out.

-i have put 2 sets of curtains up in my living room and my childrens' room. for some reason in my old house i accumulated lots of curtains and when i moved a friend donated another beautiful set so i have enough to be able to double up and once i get a rail at the front and back doors i will be able to double up there aswell.

    - i also keep the curtains closed during the day in north facing rooms. unfortunately for me this is the side of the house that faces into the street so all my neighbours must think i am a lazy so and so!!

-this wasn't started as a frugal thing but more a tradition, when i first moved out of my parents' house they insisted i come round on fridays for takeaway (tehy are not frugal at all!!) and sundays for sunday dinner and the tradition has carried on for the last 6 years. as i said it wasn't started as a frugal thing but i imagine it has saved me quite a lot over the years. 2 free meals a week plus whatever tea i drink and electric i use that i am not using at home!!

there are probably lots more that i do but cant think of.

one thing i have found a bit strange on this thread though is how often people seem to blow their nose!! do you all blow your noses before using the loo? i am lucky if i need to blow mine once a week unless ill with a cold. and i dont mean i am wiping on my sleeve all the other times i mean i actually dont need to blow it.

also, minesweeping? very stupid thing to do. aside from the backwashing and risk of the person not actually being finished, how do you know that the reason the drink was left wasn't because the drinker suspected it of being spiked? unless you actually sit watching people in wait of them not finishing, which is just creepy IMO.

  • or maybe that should be 48 reusable baby wipes!! math isn't a strong point! LOL

  • also, (unrelated to thread topic) can i just ask, is there a way to mark my place on a thread that would save me having to scroll through to find the last part i read or do i just have to remember what page i was on and scroll through it?

I also send OH to the local supermarket to do a number two. This is for more reasons than just money saving but it has made a big difference to our toilet roll consumption!

Oh dear...tea splatters on my lap moment! :rotfl:

Are the 'more reasons' because he's a bit stinky? :D

I really hope that it's not that far away...have visions of the poor man walking crossed legged to the supermarket!
