Spill the beans... on your most embarrassing MoneySaving habit [IMGRIGHT]http://images.moneysavingexpert.com/images/spillthebeans2.gif[/IMGRIGHT]

Peg up tea bags on a washing line to re-use? Make chicken soup out of old KFC bones? Use bubble wrap as double glazing? Come on MoneySavers, spill 'em!

Picking up coal dropped in the street by careless coalman on his rounds, training my neighbours to never throw anything out without offering it to us first (kitchen worktop, toastie maker, chest of drawers, bike, oh dear the list is embarassingly long :o), using my childrens' savings as an emergency interest-free loan (now paid back :)), using my husband's old boxer shorts in a patchwork quilt, is that enough for now ? :D

Inadvertant moneysaving that I'm watching right now - my 9 month old son is surrounded by toys and yet is playing with a 30p coaster from Ikea. And has been for days. Think Ebay is calling for the toys!

I spend far too long in the supermarket rounding up to the next pound exactly with cheap things you always need like an onion or value beans - because they don't give you loyalty points on parts of pounds! I get 2p back from every £ I spend - and I sometimes spend 5-10 minutes trying to get it exactly rounded up. so apparently I value my time at 12-24p per hour!

    I do the following:

    - Reuse large crisp packets or bags that contained food to put sandwiches in
    - Go to the toilet straight after wife, then flushing, saves on water
    - If a guests serviette has only been slightly used, I keep them for mopping frying pan oil up then throwing them away

    To name but a few:

I use those flimsy vegetable bags from Tescos to cover plates of food in the fridge instead of clingfilm and knot them at the side, it drives my kids bonkers! I also reuse those zip lock plastic bags.

As I pay credit card bills online I keep the envelopes that come with the bill and use them with a label over the return address for my own letters, also I keep and reuse jiffy envelopes and bubble wrap and use the plain side of junk mail paper for photocopying, lists etc.

I scavenge wood from the fields to make fires and wrap myself in a thick coat or blanket - not that daft as heating oil cost me £3000 last winter!

I jump in the bath water after my son even if it is nearly cold.

I put my J cloths through the washing machine and carry on using them until they are virtually shredded!

I insist that only I pack the bags in Tescos and not my companions so that I can avoid putting too much in each and get the maximum number of clubcard points for reusing the bags, also try to add a couple on here and there! In fact I collect plastic bags obsessively but that is another story!

I am starting to think that maybe I need to get a life....!!!!!
  • I ask people at work to save bubble wrap and padded envelopes, and reuse them to post items I sell on ebay, but I like to think I'm doing my bit to save the planet.
Used to save any and every money off voucher, then create a shopping list around them!:o
  • Didnt want to pay for baggage with Ryanair and didnt want to have to buy a special jascket from Rufus Roo so I made my own with a cheap jacket from charity shop. Wife wont travel with me if I use it cos she says i look like a vagrant!
  • All of the above! - but recently I think I did my best money saver ever - I have real problems getting just the right fit of jeans, so tend to wear them out completely then spend ages looking for new ones that I can afford - so the last pair I wore out the 'bottom' on I chopped the still reasonable condition legs off, found a pair of cropped jeans I hated in the back of the wardrobe, cut the legs off them too, then joined the good legs to the good top bit! they are different shades of blue, and are reminiscent of Barbera's pants in 'the good life' - and I LOVE them!
