  • I turn off all electrical plugs and sockets when not in use (including lights) to save electric. I too sit in the dark to watch tv.

I freeze the majority of left over food for re-use which also creates an interesting mix so you dont have to have the same meal twice running!

Use money off coupons/saver coupons for reducing food bill each week.

I never thought I would enjoy doing this one but I do (I used to be a moisturiser snob) I make my own from glycerin and aloe vera. Cheap, effective and my skin looks better than it ever did with the hugely expensive types. Go figure :rotfl:

With you on the chicken thing and would love your recipe for moisturiser!
  • I always use supermarket comparison site for cheapest place to get household essentials and one christmas did all the major supermarkets and got a £320.00 shop for just over £150.00 took a few hours to do list then buy products but well worth the saving. I also check out the reduced sections in store and off subject of groceries i never have a bath at home and use the gym showers instead why use ny hot water when i can use theres.

There are so many but these are the ones I can think of that I do-
*keep a sponge by the sink and give it a wipe down each day, using a bit of vinegar to make it shine-saves on bathroom cleaner.
*after using a facewipe, use it to clean surfaces like window sills, tables,of any dusty surface!
*use old newspaper, letters, cardboard food packaging and junk mail as an alternative to cat litter
*reuse colour catcher sheets (only do this once)
*clean the kitchen and bathroom floor with value/basic baby wipes
*use money off minimum spend vouchers to stock up on things always needed (recently used 10 off 50 spend at MR T online and bought value pasta x 10,value baby wipes x10 etc)
*mutually agree with a friend not to buy eachother a present at christmas
*keep the heating off until as late as possible in the year and wear layers, fleeces etc for as long as possible
*only have heating on in the lounge, bathroom and possibly kitchen

And last but definately not least-collecting coupons! :-D

Ha, almost everything I do is embarrassing! I mention this one though because I've never seen anyone else do it: When I'm in the supermarket, there always seems to be a lot of bubble wrap lying around that was used to separate the layers of fruit. This gets thrown away, so I always put it in with my shopping and I ask if I can take it home for eBaying. Not once has this happened without a withering look from the shop assistant who always think it's weird, but I can put up with this (they always get annoyed when I double check that they've given me reward points for reusing carrier bags too) in order to save a few quid each time as buying new bubble wrap is surprisingly expensive.
    Overpay!

And I always used to think everything I do to save money was embarrassing and I was the only one doing it. :D
Going through this thread makes me realise we are the real people keeping this country running.. :rotfl:

I save dryer fluff, hair from brush and hoover fluff to line my hanging baskets,
I always walk with my eyes on the ground, I have found £20's, £10's, all kinds of cash this way,
Any unused veg/fruit thats going a bit iffy I open freeze and use later, or let it dry out at the top of the fridge depending on what it is,
This summer we have eaten dandelion, dock and hawthorn salads, and the leaves I pay for around my cauliflower get eaten too.
My mum grows her own friut n veg so I figure most of what is growing I can eat: beetroot leaves, brussel sprout greens and stalks. Be mindful of this as there are exceptions though,
I buy really cheap washing powder (value brands) for whites as it has loads of bleaching agents, no 'oxy whitener' needed,
I iron my daughters school shirt when wet, and when I wash it again hang it to dry on a coathanger, then It doesnt need ironing for a few washes,
I wash some stuff in the shower with me, all sorts like cleaning cloths, make up brushes etc
I take no notice whatsoever of 'best before' dates & never have done
I buy reduced salad leaves and decant them into one of those longer-for-fresher fridge bags which I also rinse out and use again n again,
My mum always asks her neighbour for the chicken carcass for 'stock' but eats from it too,
We cut the top from the toothpaste tubes and any other toiletry we can get away with,

But the best, best money scrimping tip I have read on here I will now do, and thats saving the prepaid envelopes from companies and putting a label over them. I had never thought of that and I think its brilliant!!:T

I ask for a doggy bag in a restaurant if I can't finish my dinner...

Also use one teabag to make 2 cups of tea (although this is not as gross as it sounds, because the way I drink tea it barely has chance to get cold between uses!)

I once mentioned to my OH about how useful one of those 'toothpaste keys' would be for squeezing the last bit out of tubes and he has never let me live down such a suggestion...I still have not had the courage to buy one :o
We must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret and disappointment
