Not being funny though but I cant afford to visit Australia. Flights aint cheap last time I looked - not far shy of £1000?
    [/QUOTE]

You say you spend £2,000 a month, and £700-£900 of that is on food. If you cut back on all that spending you could go to Australia.

I confess to collecting sugar sachets from coffee shops, and luxury toiletries from hotel stays. At home I am on a water meter so have money saving water habits. My shower water starts off cold as it travels along the pipes so I collect the cold water in a bucket and use it later for general cleaning jobs or the garden. I usually save 1 gallon per shower. In drought conditions I have also collected the water I have showered or bathed in and my veg and fruit appreciate it. When I have messy plates I use the cooking water to soak them. I fill a cereal bowl with water to soak off sticky weetabix and then transfer that water to the next bowl and so on.

When i wash my hands or need to run the tap for some reason in the kitchen, i collect the water in a bowl and use that to rinse plates off.

    Hi everyone.

Just thought I would try and think of some money saving ways, embarrassing or not, that I have been known to do that have not been mentioned already. (Appologies if I do repeat anything already said).

    1) I have been known to take all the mints from the table at the end of a meal, after everyone has had one. I keep them in my bag or pocket so that when I am at the shops with the kids and they start asking for something to eat, or for me to buy some sweets, I hand out the mints instead. Saved a fortune doing this, as I am not keen on sweet things so it works for me.

    2) I never buy furniture polish, I fill the sink with hot soapy water and wipe everything down with a cloth, then dry with a tea towel.

    3) Also wash windows outside with soapy water and dry off with kitchen paper.

    4) Use old newspaper sprinkled with water to clean mirrors, they come up sparkling! (Given this tip by man who put in my mirrored wardrobe).

    4) Never use air freshner, just let in fresh air through open window.

    5) If I am at a the loo, (not in someone's house), I have been known to stick some toilet paper in my pocket so I can have a free wipe when I get home. (That's awful isn't it?). :p

    6) I also eat everyone's left overs too! Only from my family that is. (Hate waste, but now gaining a waist doing this. Just can't throw anything away).

    7) All shredded paperwork makes excellent free bunny bedding. And if you ask nicely at your local veg shop they give you a bag of free leaves for the pets, that have been trimmed off the veg etc.

    8) Make sure to have bath or shower during daylight hours, so I don't have to have bathroom light on.

    9) Only ever take '1' Paracetamol when needed. Works just as well as taking 2 and better for your liver. Tablets are cheaper than buying capulets too.

    10) Only buy the shops own brand medication as well as own brand food.

Well thought of 10 for you. If I remember any more I will let you know. x

My DD6 just loves going through all the open lockers in the swimming pool changing rooms after her swimming lessons, and frequently finds 50p that some poor previous person has forgotton to pick up!

i did this once and got 3 pairs of good goggles (one each for bro, sis and me) and £6 there was 300 lockers but i was really impressed and now do it all the time :S as long as no one is looking i rarely come away with nothing :D

i buy all my meat on the yellow sticker shelf :)

i use tesco value baby shampoo as "posh" handwash in a fancy bottle and have been complimented on how soft it leaves your hands :P

i lay out socks on top of the tumble dryer so that they dry from the heat. i also use the water from the condenser bit to soak dirty pans and dishes

i bulk out food with kidney beans or lentils that cost nothing from places like approved food :)

i clean the bathroom floor with water from the tumble dryer condenser drawer

i check the water parameters and leave it in the fish tank for as long as it is "safe" rather than changing so much every week when it doesn't need it

i take the paper veg bags from the market and use them for my packed lunches :)

i use one note on the computer so that i hardly ever use any paper

if i have only worn a dress for dinner i hang it back up and wear it a couple of days later as it doesnt need washing if its only been worn for a couple of hours.

worn out primarni ugg boots make lovely slippers

worn out soapnuts can be boiled for half an hour and pureed in a blender to make washing liquid for the next 2 or 3 washes :)

i dont mind telling you this as you dont know me :) x
  • Just found about 1000 brown paper bags in my attic that I used to use on my old market stall and was wondering what to do with them. Should have thought about sandwich bags. Was going to put them on ebay, but thought no one would pay postage. So thousands of sarnies now on their way!! :)

I remember reading this tip on here years ago and it's what I always do:

blow your nose then wipe your front, and if theres enough left wipe your bum all with the same piece of loo roll :rotfl:

Been known to do this too, well not the back, just the front!!!

It's normal for humans to drink human milk. It's not normal for humans to drink the milk from other creatures - now THAT is what I find bizarre!

I think it's odd that everyone is happy to drink cows milk but when the dog had milk and some leaked out on him, my son acted like it was radioactive slime, he couldn't get it off his hand quick enough.

Can't say I'd be wild about having dog milk on my cereal but hey, I guess it's just milk right?

  • A lot of our decisions are driven more by reducing waste and thinking of the planet than saving money, but tends to result in saving money. One of my more embarrassing habits is using my daughter's dirty muslin square (which she sleeps with, catches milk dribbles, and she likes using to clean things with) to wipe her snotty nose! It's going to go through the wash anyway, saves using a tissue and she much prefers it! Don't think I'm all that embarrassed about the other things I do!
