I found it a bit thick so I experimented with mixing it with thinner and cheaper body lotions/E45 lotion.
Tesco Value Baby Lotion still about 9p if you want a thinner.

    Technically theft.

Hotels do not count the taking of 'consumables' as theft. I know this cos my mate runs one and I used to work in them. So stuff that can't be consumed i.e towels, bathrobes etc would be theft if removed however Tea, coffee, shower gel etc is there for the taking and is counted as part of the room cost.

Now I've invested (I hope that's the correct term as I haven't worked out the finances) in some raw shea butter and various essential oils so I can create my own lotions. Also a good way of using up hotel stuff that's maybe not up to the quality you want to use 'neat' - nothing ever gets wasted, it's all mixed in somehow.

I shall be trying out the homemade moisturiser next (thanks for the recipe)!

You can turn your shea butter into lotion by melting it with a wax (ie beeswax) then blending it with cold water. I think you are supposed to add oils like vitamin e (just a few drops) when it is blending with the water, something to do with heat maybe? Would explain why cold pressed raw butters are better. Anyway try tbsp wax + 1/2 cup shea butter melted then blended bit by bit to 2 cups water, it should make a nice thin but nourishing lotion. Less water makes a good moisturiser for dry winter hands.

Thanks for the tips! I never thought of adding water. I use various oils I have lying around from impulse buying (bio/Vit-E/tea tree/olive/argan) but it does then separate so needs a good shaking (adds to the fitness regine that way too!). I've also tried a few drops of rosewater (leftover from homemade toner) but I shall keep experimenting with these ideas too.

Ok this is cringeworthy but it was a long time ago....

my mum, god rest her, use to work in a posh hotel/restaurant as a silver waitress and when meals were cleared away, she would keep the left over steak and bring it home for our dog. He was the best fed dog in the neighbourhood..... am so glad no one can see my face.....

when I found out and asked mum about this, she just shrugged her shoulders and said whats the problem, Butch is happy, fillet/sirloin/rump in gravy and biscuits? then she told me that the chef would keep the bones for her and then we started getting left over wedding buffet food. Am sure the chef had a thing for mum.

Some of what I do have already been mentioned -

1 teabag for 2 cups (I always buy the Tetleys / Typhoo one cups for £1 from Farmfoods. Bargain.)

I'm one of those who shops in the evening and buys 'whoopsied' stuff but I don't care what the cashiers think as they scan all my reduced items :rotfl:

Similarly, I pop to the local Spar after tea for my bread. Freeze and defrost as I need a round or two. Can't remember the last time I paid full price for bread.

Re-use takeaway cartons to freeze leftover portions.

Always ask for a doggy bag if I can't eat everything i've ordered.

Re-use bread bags to wrap sandwiches for work.

Bake cakes on the bottom shelf whilst something else is cooking in the oven.

+1 for taking hotel complimentary tea/coffee/shampoos. Great for camping or weekends away.

Buy a large 2 pint milk and decant into about 3 portions. Keep one and freeze 2. I only have milk in cups of tea so this works for me.

Buy work clothes in charity shops.

Cut up Christmas cards for gift tags.

Forage for raspberries & blackberries on dog walks. I also pick up ice lolly sticks as my mum uses them for labelling plants she grows.

I'm sure there's more but that's all I can think of at the moment. Some good ideas on here, thanks for posting!

What's cringworthy about that? My doggies would be over the moon to be fed steak as often as you'd like to give it to them...not like your mum was washing it off and feeding it to you dad? :rotfl:

Yes nothing wrong with that - I thoguht you were going to say she fed it to you.

I do lots of the above - we also reuse the takeaway cartons that son gets - plus he saves fish/chip boxes that I use as cat food dishes.

I am going to get my 17 year old DD to read some of these, she thinks its embarrassing that I have downshifted to some value brand products!!! She is off to uni next year, sure all her brand snobbery will change. I actually do a few of the things on here, she never notices.
    Thoughts to all. Mrs D.
