"Future Father in Law"
I work in the bloated cushy public sector and took a week off when my mother died (in Spain)
(I came back to work and was very half hearted for the first few days but work does soon normalise things and help get the grieving process into perspective)
On my return I was questioned why I hadn't come back sooner as I had only been expected to take 3 days
Reasonably, for a future father in law I would suggest 2-3 days and then a day off for the funeral
How long would he take when a proper relative dies
Talks to him on his return and ask him how much of his leave he wants to take as paid leave and unpaid leave and get a policy in place for next time it happens with any employee otherwise a precedent has been set0 -
The company is also being very generous in allowing annual leave of five weeks in one stretch.0

Two weeks off work for the death of a non-relative is taking the p*ss, regardless of how good a worker they are!
I'd say 1 week paid is fair, but any time after this should be unpaid, or taken from annual leave.
When my Grandma died last year, I had to take either a day of holiday, or have a day unpaid.
I think that the death of a grandparent warrants more leave then the death of someone who isn't a relative.0 -
emotions are different. You cannot place an arbitrary value on human life!
(not saying that the employer has to pay for it, but if someone isnt ready to come back to work, they aint ready, no matter how related they are - this is their partners family, and no one here knows the circs)0 -
Big companies and small companies can differ. I do know though that if one of my colleagues was in this awful situation, I dont think people would be moaning about unfairness, they would rally together to make sure that person's role was covered while they took the time they needed.0

But on the other hand you think it's fine to treat one colleague well like that but when another colleague's family member dies the next month and is only give a day off, you'd think that was fine too. Me, I'd feel aggrieved for the colleague who was treated badly and I would lose some respect for the employer and the company.
I never said anything of the sort. I think you are mistaking me for someone else!0 -

Some people are very close to their friends, others are deeply attached to their pets. Where do you draw the line?0 -

you have a broad guideline, and you use management discretion. Just like any other absence or situation really!0 -
My parent just passed and my sibling, who has a responsible job and has regularly worked 10-20 unpaid hours every week, as well as being on call most Xmases for no extra pay, since they started employment nearly 25 years ago, got one week compassionate leave. That's a typical public sector timescale.0

most jobs I have ever had, the allowance has been zero, technically.0
