    OH MY GOD!
If my husband saw this comment he would hit the roof!
He has been a Retail Security Officer/Door Person for over 7 years but due to lack of jobs, he ended up taking on 2 part time cleaning jobs, which is something he had never done before.
In january this year both of these contracts ended due to the companies not wanting cleaners anymore and he has been unemployed since and this is not because THERE ARE NO JOBS HE FANCIES APPLYING FOR, it is because THERE ARE NO JOBS! and what he does apply for on a daily basis he never gets anything back or rejections.

So please refrain from stating things you clearly know NOTHING about.

In fairness they said a lot of the time, not ALL of the time and to be honest I'd tend to agree with that comment. there are some people who wouldn't be seen dead cleaning or the like and who wouldn't apply for jobs they see as beneath themselves, obviously your OH isn't one of those but sadly in my experience it's quite true and happens a lot.

actually she didnt leave college of her own accord as many seem to think . She completed a year course in animal management and the got a place on a College of Animal Welfare course in veterinary nursing, however a week into the course the colllege could not find her a work placement and so she had to leave, She was gutted as this is something she always wanted to do. Thanks for all the practical advise that has been given, but it really is not easy finding employement in this day and age.
Dont think I will be kicking her out onto the streets either as someone suggested.

In that case she could be better remaining in education to get a level 3 qualification to enable her to do a degree or foundation degree in veterinary nursing.

It's never a good idea to give up too easily.

It is now too late for her to enrole in level 3 course as they started in september so would have to wait till next september and then restart the 2 year course. She has already looked into this option

It's the Weekend....so here's a task for your daughter to do over the next two days:

Get hold of the Thomsons Local Directory and the Yellow Pages. Make a list of every vet, cattery, kennel, stables in the area. The list should include every place she can reasonably get to - so she may also need some bus timetables (If you don't have these at home, she can get them at the library)...she then researches these places on the internet so she knows a little about each of them.

On Monday, she phones each and every one of these places. She does not simply speak to the person on the phone, she asks to speak to the personnel manager (- for a small establishment this may weell be the person on the phone!). She then says..."Good Morning, my name is xxxx, I have my xxxx(insert exact name of certificate in animal management that she has completed and any grade) and have been studying for my xxxx(insert name of course she has left). I need a work placement and would be interested in completing this at xxxx(insert name of establishment). Would this be possibl? I can e-mail you my CV or I am available for interview at any time."....if they agree, she notes down any relevant details and then moves on to the next name on her list. (She should not just accept one 'yes' get as many as possible to keep options open!). If the answer is a 'sorry, we can't take you on at this time', then politely ask if there is a possibility of doing voluntary work, as she is desperate to work with animals.

If she prefers to visit in person that is fine, but she should try and speak to someone rather than simply leave a CV. (But she should take a CV with her!)

She should then phone the college and ask to speak to the course supervisor. She will want to make an appointment. Questions to ask the supervisor...'Whose responsibility was it to find work-placements for students?' ...If it was the college's responsibilty, then 'Would you be able to give me reasons as to why I was not found a placement?'...'Here is a list of establishments prepared to offer me the oppurtunity of a work-placement. Would I be able to renrol on the course and do my placement at one of these?....if not, could you give me reasons'.

If there are absolutely no places willing to take her on work-placement. Or if the college are not prepared to accept any of them, then she may need to look at one of two options:
Either look for a different college offering the course.
Or look at a different course. Ask the college tutor what other courses they offer that are linked to Animal Welfare.

The more determined she is, the more chance she has of getting to do the job she wants....and for the moment that probably means going back to college.

If her chosen course started in September, then she has every chance of getting on it now!

(When I worked, part of my work was helping the young unemployed get onto course/into work.....and colleges will be taking students onto most courses even into November.)

Thanks for the advice but she has already phoned every vet in the area and asked about a placement but they all say the same they are full or train their own staff and to post a cv on to be kept on record which she has done . there are no other colleges offering animal care courses in the area that have places on the courses.
