City centre living Leeds

I've got some appointments set up now so will certainly try haggling, although there doesn't seem to be a glut on the market at the lower price of around £400. He wants to be city centre to avoid travel costs and does not particularly want student digs. Which areas can you suggest, not too far out which are relatively 'safe' areas?
Are you aware how cheap travel is in Leeds
Check out metro cards and particularly the Greenrider

You can travel on all First buses within about 3 miles of the city centre, unlimited foor £12 per week, to the boundarties listed above (check out Oakwood Clock, Headlingley, Kirkstall, Halton - Avoid Halton Moor). If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

Clarence Dock is a bit of a weird area, I'm not sure I'd recommend it.0 -
I have made some appointments based on these comments. Please keep them coming. Going for viewings tomorrow. So far only have 3 possibles in price range despite the fact that everyone says there are loads of empty places. Will see how the haggling goes!0

Just a thought - if you're planning on having a look around Clarence Dock then there's an estate agent near the Armouries that seems to specialise in flat rentals.
There's always lots of vacant properties in the shop window so maybe they don't advertise online?0 -
Thanks for that. Will i be able to find it easily if I just wander around Clarence Dock. Not too familiar with area.
It seems some of the cheaper places are advertised as 'crash pads' and take studio apartments to another level! Not even room for a full cooker.0 -

There's a helpful website with an interactive map...
http://www.clarencedock.co.uk/content/store_map/
The rental place is at the far left of the map not far from the "Finger Dock" (but unfortunately not marked on the map otherwise it'd be really easy to find!). If you're travelling by car then it's at the opposite end of the Boulevard to the carpark (far right) or if you're visiting by bus/foot then it's probably the first thing you'll see when you get near to the Clarence Dock area.
I don't think it's a nice an area at the moment - it used to be better when the shopping area was occupied and there was a bit of life and energy about the place. I work in the area and walk up and down the Boulevard nearly every day so maybe I'm negatively biased.0 -
Thanks for that. I'll let you know how we get on.0

Leeds city centre has a massive oversupply of flats. Make sure you haggle on the rent, it's a real buyers market. Look at nice one beds with a list price around £500 - £550 and go in with an offer of £400.0

You need to look at the wider area and decide if he would like to live there. Sadly no-one took a strategic view of the redevelopment of leeds in the 1990s onwards and so it is a mismash of flats often surrounded by big roads- so not walking friendly and not really communities- just housing. How old/young is he? City centre flats in Leeds are often full of students (which is good of he is 25 - not so good if he is 45).June challenge £100 a day £3161.63 plus £350 vouchers plus £108.37 food/shopping saving
July challenge £50 a day. £ 1682.50/1550
October challenge £100 a day. £385/£31000 -
what about a house share? House sharing in Burley Park/ Headingly can be done for less than 300 all inclusive of bills. Even flats can be rented for cheaper than that. Try Horsforth/Burley Park/ Headingley/ Cookridge. Leeds is a very walkable city, you can get a monthly pass for 50 quid a month i think it was and taxis are reasonable. I used to walk all the time when living in Burley when working at the ice cube in Leeds, took me all of half an hour and was a nice walk, plus bowling, cinema and a food complex are all walking distance from there.
If you don't mind house shares these are in pretty quiet areas:
