I'm in South Wales too and while English is the predominant language I have work colleagues for whom Welsh is a first language . I work for the LA and all application forms ask if you can speak Welsh as it's seen as an asset as people do request to conduct their business with the council through the medium of Welsh.

The demand for Welsh education is increasing here so the LA is establishing more Welsh medium schools. There are many reasons for the increased demand for a Welsh education but it does mean that there is a growth in Welsh speakers and they will have an another string to their bow in the job market in Wales against non-Welsh speakers for many jobs in the future.

If you want to work for Carmarthenshire Council then you really need to be Welsh speaking, plus I think all their schools are bi-lingual at primary level.

Go out into the South Wales Valleys and again Welsh is often the first language.

Like it or not the revival of the Welsh language is here to stay.

My DD has just completed her GCSEs and it was compulsory for her to sit a GCSE in Welsh so she has a minimum command of the language.
Im not going to get in to a fight about speaking welsh. I have better fish to fry tbh. I said what is right to me-alot of the people i come into contact dont speak welsh fluently, and some even moan about the amount of money spent double sided letters ect (it would make more sense to ask first if they want welsh then only send wlesh or english).

I wish the op good luck. Good luck on the course as well!!!! i hope you do well

This again, it would cost more to implement an opt in/out service for bilingual letters and forms than it does to send them out. Especially if it's a double sided letter!

There are plenty of Welsh speakers in South West Wales, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and parts of Pembrokeshire, not so many in the Soputh East granted.

My girlfriend comes from Ebbw Vale and as a Welsh speaker I'm still considered a novelty there. I still get asked to say Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogeryllwyndrobwlllandisiliogogogoch though I usually say Ffa Coffi Pawb.

  • I've decided to ask for a couple of Welsh starter books/CDs for christmas from my Nan, that way I can work through them at my own pace and there's a Welsh language book shop in town that I can get recommendations and help from. Thanks guys :)
