Is there anything online where I can pick up the basics of Welsh? I'm in a Welsh uni town (North Wales, so it's heavy on the Welsh) and whilst I can get access to college run courses I simply don't have time in my schedule to fit them in.

I live in wales, although south wales. It still has all the signs in welsh and english. You will pick bits up as you go. Ysbty is a good one(hosptial) ive not met anyone who cant speak english as well. I know a few key words on signs, but like i said no one down here speaks welsh only. I looked at learning it but not worht it , for me, anyway. Good luck on the course. btw some libaries do short courses on welsh , like two hours a week.0

Helo sut mae mynd ? .......... ( Hello how is it going ? ) Just google "Learn Welsh BBC" and you can start. But the Wlpan course is your best bet and then just get out there and try it out in the shops/pubs etc. I'm sure you will also make friends at uni who are local and will teach a little.
If you want to learn Caernarfon Welsh or Cofi Welsh as it is known, have a look on youtube for "Alf cofi drwg" !!!!!!!!!! Be warned alot of swearing !!!!!!!

While all Welsh people speak English in parts of North and South Wales Welsh is still first language and it's lovely that the OP wants to learn to integrate more.~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

It is not always a first langauge, especailly down south. I looked at learning it but it is just not worth it down here as its not used alot. Sure councils send letters ect in welsh, but i dont known anyone who can speak welsh fleuntly where i live in south wales. It maybe a good idea if they want to stay their,in northwales as some jobs ask it,but if you wont, look at learning basic pharses/words. In the north it maybe totally diffrent from the south. But its not worth it down here.
I'm in South Wales too and while English is the predominant language I have work colleagues for whom Welsh is a first language . I work for the LA and all application forms ask if you can speak Welsh as it's seen as an asset as people do request to conduct their business with the council through the medium of Welsh.
The demand for Welsh education is increasing here so the LA is establishing more Welsh medium schools. There are many reasons for the increased demand for a Welsh education but it does mean that there is a growth in Welsh speakers and they will have an another string to their bow in the job market in Wales against non-Welsh speakers for many jobs in the future.
If you want to work for Carmarthenshire Council then you really need to be Welsh speaking, plus I think all their schools are bi-lingual at primary level.
Go out into the South Wales Valleys and again Welsh is often the first language.
Like it or not the revival of the Welsh language is here to stay.
My DD has just completed her GCSEs and it was compulsory for her to sit a GCSE in Welsh so she has a minimum command of the language.~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)
