Could you explain a little about what is causing you stress?
Regardless of whether you are in a union or not, you can still raise a grievance with your employer
 http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Employment/ResolvingWorkplaceDisputes/Grievanceprocedures/DG_10027992
As far as raising grievance's go , it's not a massive company - being run by robot's , who are still programmed back to the eighties when they did my job.
There's no way I wan't to return , and if I did it would be a nightmare.
And as for the causes - doing a 2 man job on my own .
No adequate training on new equipment (dangerous) .
Working 168 hrs a week ( 44 hrs , then the rest callout / standby with no pay or standby rate ) This is one week out of 4 .
Not being provided with the proper parts to do my job correctly , then being penalized and having to work overtime nearly everyday because the job is taking so much longer than it should.
Then having to deal with customer complaints and rectifications on top of that.
 It's a vicious circle , and I need out .0

Look at the end of the day there are tools available to you:
 Raise a grievance
Express your concerns re: health and safety matters & training
You can get these enforced by HSE or local authority commercial team ( whomever is responsible for your workplace)
If you are doing 2 peoples work alone then you need to raise a greivance nothing will be done about it if it looks as though you are happy with it.
You seem convinced that you will not be going back.
If thats the case you may not be entitled to benefits as you have left a job.
You wont even have "I raised a greivance, they ignored it, therefore they are making it impossible for me to work there" to back your corner for JSA claim.
Personally ( and believe me I have been where you are) I would suggest you are walking headlong into poverty.
I suppose your other option is for your wife to get a job and you look after the newborn.
Its the only way I guess you will be able to keep afloat. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
 This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0

OP, ignore all the sanctimonious crap, evidence that your gp advised you to leave would be very strong evidence in your favor0

Living on benefits is stressful enough at the best of times; living on emergency payments because benefits have been refused, even more so.0

Nonsense, it's not even advice it's a statement of fact0

its not a statement of fact Dookar.
GPs are not responsible for the wider effects of stress ( aka the employer, family problems, bereavements) just that the patient takes time to get better or that they do something to mitigate the stress. OP is going for the 'flight' position instead of 'fight' and thats probably the type of person he is ( i am a flighter too) That said I wouldn't chuck my job in with a little newborn baby, mum at home not working and the risk of no money coming into the household.
Again, cant the wife get a job now to soften the blow?
He may also wish to consider the impact of what his reference might look like for leaving a job after work related stress. I guess again it depends what sort of work OP is in, if it is very specialised with lots of vacancies then he might find it easy to find work. It sounds like he is on some way on the road repairing things? OP should be getting onto potential employers and frantically job seeking then its no problem to leave.
I can agree with others that say being on JSA is anxiety raising, we waited 6 weeks for OHs JSA to come through there was no money on the gas, no food in the cupboard and bills were going unpaid. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? It really is, such evidence could even be accepted as just cause.
Maybe you think so,. but honestly it isnt.
What evidence do we take to the GP exactly? In my experience we go in, explain we are experiencing stress at work.
The GP makes no contact with employers, they dont gather the 2 sides to the story, they are not employment lawyers or counsellors or life coaches. They are not trade union/ acas/ HSE/ commercial health and safety experts.
They deal with the medical problem the patient presents with and nothing more. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
