Most of my ladies who've had this problem found the slower release ones were the worst ones for weight loss.

Have you got him on any supplements (eyeq and B vitamins, particularly 6 and 12 do sometimes help)

Dairy is good for weight gain combined with a carb. One of my faves for the kids is alien pasta. So called coz it's green. It's basically pasta combined with slightly over cooked broccoli (or frozen as it mushes), peas and french beans. Chop the cooked veg, stir through the pasta with a pack of philly type cream cheese and slacken off with milk. For extra calories add crispy bacon and grated cheese on top. I find this is a good bulker if my boys have been ill and they can shovel it in with a spoon with minimum effort.

Peanuts are high in calories and can be bought cheaply in huge bags.
  • How about snacks such as boiled eggs, nuts, peanut butter sandwiches, tin of rice pudding etc.

Try myfitnesspal website - you can track what is eaten everyday calorie wise and it breaks that down into carbs, fat, protein etc. So if you want to aim for 2500 for example for him, you or he can log everything that's eaten and then see if you are on target. My OH used this to put on weight as he couldn't work out why he wasn't putting on weight even with bigger portions; it really helped as it's the same principle as losing weight :)
