Sorry to hear you've had such a tough time - it's great that you're aware of how it's affected you and that you're trying to take care of yourself.

No harm to have a chat with your Doc. Fats are the most energy-rich type of food so they will help boost your calorie intake. Try to go for the healthy fats like olive oil. Whereas I try to lighten recipes with low calorie substitutes (I have the opposite problem to you!), maybe you could enrich whatever you eat - say by stirring olive oil into pasta sauces (an Italian friend of a friend used to always add a spoon of good olive oil at the end of cooking and it tasted amazing), or a spoon of cream into porridge. Nuts and seeds are also quite calorific, but they are healthy too so you could scoff them with a clear conscience. Another healthy snack with a good whack of calories is hummus with full-fat tahini and olive oil - I could happily eat it with a spoon! :D You could dip toasted wholemeal pittas cut into strips - more calories than veg crudites.

Best of luck! I hope you have a peaceful and stress-free 2010 and life is good to you.

There was a series on Channel 4 called Supersize v Superskinny, take a look at the link, that may help.

  • I have always found a diet rich in pies, kebabs and pints of bitter to be most useful here - it's worked a treat for me, and I'm pleased to be able to share the secret with others.

    HTH :)

There is nothing unattractive about a size 6 figure, I know most men say they like a bit of meat, but not me, Size 0 -6 is perfect.

To gain weight, eat food with extremely high caloric value. Try to increase your food intake without consuming too much fat and sugar. Regular meals, especially breakfast, are important if you find it difficult to gain weight. Taking your time with meals and making sure you are relaxed is also important to ensure that your digestive system functions properly. Having some fixed timings and avoid eating in between so as to increase the hunger for food.

I was very very poorly and lost A LOT of weight. When I saw my consultant once he told me to go straight to the chip shop, get fish and chips and drink a milkshake!

I actually found eating more often helpful... and having a chinese for a snack in the evening!

And I didn't think about whether I was eating healthily or not. I knew I had to get my weight up and ate an awful lot of junk food ;)

hello everyone. i just wanted to ask if anyone knew how to gain weight safely.
my eldest aged 14 has been worried about her weight, she is 5ft6 and weights 6 stone. she has always had a very high metabolism and has been able to eat what ever she wants without gaining an pound.
ive asked her to keep a food diary when she is at school and away from home so we can workout her diet.
but i really dont want her issues with her weight to become a problem.
i think the reason why she wants to gain a little more weight is because she in the past has been picked on about being too thin.
all her clothing has to be taken in (too big in the waist)
and she is always tired and lacks enegy.
ive tried explaning to her that in a few more years she will gain weight and fill out more, but she wants to gain weight now.
so what im asking is does anyone know how to gain weight safely and does anyone else have the same problems?
thanks for taking the time to reading this.

My DD is similar ;) I try to feed her calorie dense foods. Eating often, and snacking helps too.

Try this older thread (I'll merge this later) for more ideas.

    Good luck

  • Before you start stuffing her full of full fat dairy, cheese, butter and nuts, might be a good idea to have a checkup at the Doctors. I only say this because of the always being tired and lacking energy, might be a symptom of something.
