Healthy food to put weight on...

When i was nursing we used to give patients a drink called "build up" between meals. It was like a flavoured milkshake and it turned out to be pretty close to slim fast, so when a friend of mine asked me, I told her to try slim fast between meals to help build her up.
Seemed to work for her.

and she finally worked out after 4 months, how to make that quote her sig! :rotfl:I will pay jexygirl the compliment of saying that she invariably writes a lot of sense!0 -
DS2 went through an extremely slim/food intolerant phase from about 8-12 years old and was doing lots of sport so needed to keep his calorie intake up for that as well. He liked whole-fat milk fruit smoothies (with a dollop of icecream added into the whizz) and especially liked making them himself. We invested in a Kenwood smoothie-to-go maker which meant that the children could take them in the car on journeys as well. Don't know if I'm allowed a link (apologies if not) http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0014IPIHW/?!!!!!googhydr-21&hvadid=3123123176&ref=pd_sl_5dormqjfpm_e
Something else that we made a lot was eggy bread. You can eat it on its own or with baked beans on top, or stir fry, or other veggies, and grated cheese ontop of the lot.
I also remember the 'little and often' trick working well.0 -
its worrying me how many people are saying to try the powdered foods for convalescents and bodybuilders - its not real food! for a child you need to encourage healthy eating - and reliance on these shakes etc - thats NOT healthy.
kids need fats carbs and all the other food groups! they dont need to gain weight quickly - just like slimmers shouldnt lose weight quickly. a healthy diet will bring weight back up - the body re-adjusts from starvation mode and realises its going to be fed - but that takes time!
I am not a nutritionist - just a parent who had a son who was dairy intolerant - and could lose pounds during a severe asthma attack!
I just encouraged him by giving favourite foods - even if it was spag bol for breakfast and giving healthy snacks along with whatever he fancied (jam sandwiches for tea).
I did not EVER give him build up - even when a doctor recommended it - he gained weight through eating real food - even a mcdonalds when he wanted one! and i DONT class those as real food.0 -
Go nuts! Almonds, Brazil nuts, Walnuts etc...........all quite fattening in a healthy way.Instigated terrorism the road to dictatorship.0

Hi everyone. Maybe this is the wrong place to post, so please move if necessary, but I like the Old Stylers the best on MSE and trust your advice.
So... I have had a ridiculously stressful year. I have two part time jobs and am almost finished doing a degree, and am a single parent to a 13 year old daughter. All I have done all year is rush from one job to the other, sometimes rush to college, rush home and go to bed. I have had no real time off work apart from when my dad had a triple bypass and I took time off to look after him. Last year my daughters dad died and I think I havent really got over that either. (I'm not moaning by the way but I know it sounds like it!)
The problem is that I have always been petite but now I am down to a size 6 and I dont like it. Its not healthy or attractive. I know that its because of all the stress and trying to keep on top of things. The only way i can think to put on weight is to eat crisps, chocolate, stuff like that, which obviously isnt healthy. Please can anyone suggest healthy ways to put some weight back on.

Hi
Sounds like you've had a stressful time. Well done on the degree! Can't say I have ever tried to put on weight myself, unfortunately always the opposite. But if you like sweet treats I can definitely recommend Twinks hobnobs - healthy cos of the oats but addictive so you have to eat lots! Just search the forum, there's a long thread about them.0 -

hmmm, maybe plenty of sauces with meals, cream/olive oil/butter type things, pasta with hearty portions of ragu (bolognaise type sauce)
butter and full fat mayo on sandwiches,
full fat with extra whipped cream hot chocs form the coffee shop (i know not very os)
honestly, i'd suggest speaking to your doctor (if you have time
) and making sure you eat aat least 3 meals a day with a couple of snacks too

you can still eat heathily while putting on wieght, I had this prob after breastfeeding - I lost too much wieght and was looking anorexic at six stone!
for one - eat breakfast! even if its only one weetabix - at this time of year with hot milk and a little sugar - lovely!
elenveses - if you can - hot milky drink? coffee or choc.if you cannot face breakfast then by now you could prob manage bacon sarnie or a boiled egg.
lunch - whaever you want - but DONT skip it - even if its only a bowl of cereal or cheese on toast.
tea - have a bit of toast with butter or a scone if you like sweet things
dinner - pig out!!! you prob know the dieting rules - chuck them out! have a takeaway or a good roast dinner or anything you fancy really.
for those trying to lose weight - reverse these suggestions!
by breakfasting like a king lunching like a prince and dining like a pauper I lost over three stone - painlessly!
think about the principle - your body need fuel - If you put it in at start of day - then reduce the input - overnight your body will stabilise.
if you starve at beginning of day - your body panics and goes into starvation mode (conserves all fat supplies) then you eat more at night! when you go to sleep - the body is shutting down - so food will be stored for a later date!
reversing this reassure the body that food is forthcoming - so it can afford to utilise it and store it too!0
